I really want to try the 1/4 pounder in the bridge, but that thing is noisy as heck. its output is like 10.9-11. and whenever i try to install it lately my wiring seems suspect cuz the hum is pretty loud. i dont know if its my pots, soldering, bad ground or something....

What about a Dimarzio HS-2? Its designed as a single-coil sized pickup, but it has BOTH the humbucker attribute (when both coils are engaged) and the single-coil sized when only one of the coil is engaged. Eric Johnson uses the single-coil only option on his signature "Virginia" model.

I've been using the HS-2 (in single-coil mode) as a bridge pickup in my strat with PV 54's for the middle and neck. In this configuration, the HS-2 measures 8K4; well into P-90/PAF territory. It's also the pickup EJ used in his 50's strats before his signature guitar became available. I prefer it over the Quarter Pounder and various other hot pickups I've tried. It doesn't seem to over-power the 54's like one might expect. The combinations actually sound pretty good. I haven't considered the switching possibilities but on a single pickup guitar it would make sense.
