Some modern Teles come with the mod already made - a neck pickup worthy of a wire. If you have a "vintage" model, this is the mod, hands down. Get the right replacement pup and it's even better than just removing it.

One one, it was a push between a Plek fretjob w/ bigger frets and an OG WRHB.
On the other, a new, non-fender neck.

Replaced the SCN pups in my American Deluxe with a Cavalier Lion and Creamery WRHB and a ToneShaper. Went from a display piece to my No. 2.

Fernandomania nailed the best one. After that, I guess it would be my McVay B-bender.

    my general mod steps:

    1. replace stock strap buttons: dunlops for me, but i've used schallers before

    2. replace the stock pickups: my current faves are fralins and OV - but there are *soo many* great options that there is no excuse for not having great sounding pups.
(* I include replacing any internal electronics in this step if they are sub-standard)

    3. Set-up: either pro or just me working thru action, intonation, etc..

    4. other mods: Electro-socket, bridge/saddles, dome knobs, nut, tuners: depending on what the guitar comes with.

    i always do 1 + 2.

It's a process rather than one single thing.

Fret level and crown + a well cut nut.

Choice of pickup,in my case Rob DiStefanos' Lion for my Esquire.

A good amp. There are many.

After this plan you will have a very playable tele that sounds good.

    What else is there? :D
