I've thought it's autobiographical musing over a life after stardom; he's speaking to the image in the mirror. I'm not sure where I got that notion but I didn't think it up on my own. He wrote that at a time when he was in fact considering giving it all up.I'll have to think on this one a while...
For reasons I still can't put my finger on...
( maybe it's the poetry, Dylan's pissed off, voice, the sound of the band, that first snare drum CRACK!)
...I hold "Like A Rolling Stone" in such high regard- it's my favorite song, period. And I don't know who Bob is addressing? Could be anyone, or himself?
You ask him, and he'll just be annoyed and say " it's just a song I wrote..." or " I just put some good rhyming lines together..." or " It means whatever you want..." The guy thinks like no one else. The songcraft on this one is just mind-blowing, at least to me...
I think maybe it's just the sound of the band ( similar time of recording) or a little descending part in the chord structure, plus Dylan's vocal delivery, but his own "Positively 4th Street" could be 'Like A Rolling Stone- Lite'
Plus you know, if you (hypothetically) actually got to interview Bob face-to-face, he'd probably say:I've thought it's autobiographical musing over a life after stardom; he's speaking to the image in the mirror. I'm not sure where I got that notion but I didn't think it up on my own. He wrote that at a time when he was in fact considering giving it all up.
I know it contradicts the miss lonely line, but artistic and all that. And that could also just mean he's got a few people in mind.
And he'd be rightPlus you know, if you (hypothetically) actually got to interview Bob face-to-face, he'd probably say:
" It's just a song I wrote, a long time ago...I just put a bunch of cool rhymes together"
OR
" Why do you care so much about what I think the song is about?!"
I can't tell if he's ever given a straight or coherent answer to any question asked, or I'm just stupid.
Bob is on his own planet, but I love him!
And he'd be right![]()
