I've thought about this often... regarding players and songwriters and singers.
In my musical career my identity seems to lack a particular signature style... When I write a song it may come out as blues, or it may come out as more of a modern "solo acoustic pop" style of thing. Or something else. I'm just totally eclectic.
Popular musicians/singers often seem to have a sound that's easy to identify.
Like Rod Stewart's vocals for instance, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, SRV's guitar playing. CSN&Y's harmonies, Joni Mitchell etc. You can ID them in the first few seconds of a song. It seems to a large extent the reason for their popularity, more important than musicianship or vocal range. (not intended to mean I'm saying they aren't good)

What about you? Do you have an identifiable style or are you eclectic?

    I have two signature styles.
My country playing is very 60s stlye, with pedal steel mimicry, courtesy of my Hipshot B bender.
My other style is kinda 50s-60s “lounge” guitar, courtesy of my Chet.
Between the two I make an uncomfortable living, when there’s no pandemics.

I write for an Americana act, so there is an array of "styles" from folk, honky tonk, rockabilly, country rock, jug band, blues, etc. I like to think that my writing style transcends the "format boundaries" because of the manner in which the assembled lyrics present to the listener. All I need to test my theory is an audience and an exit poll.
