I just picked up a Stomp XL after selling my Helix LT in hopes of using some pedals again. I need ideas of how to organize the pedalboard (which board to buy, where to put the power supply, where to place pedals, etc.). Thanks in advance!

This is an HX Effects based rig, but it might give you some ideas about integrating external pedals with the stomp XL:

I run the FlyRig Sansamp and Plexi sections always on for my basic “edge of breakup” amp tone and my cab sim and I use the boost feature on the FlyRig for solos - it’s voiced really well.

The HX Effects is the hub of the setup. I run the FlyRig in one of the loops of the HX Effects so that I can put a compressor and a couple of flavours of overdrive in front of the FlyRig and a noise gate, EQ and delays and reverbs after the FlyRig.

The two EB jr volume pedals are set up as two expression pedals for the HX Effects so that I can control any parameters I need to with each. Usually I have one set up as a straight up volume pedal (post amp and pre delays and reverbs) and the second set up to control the wet/dry mix on both a reverb and delay simultaneously, which allows me to tailor the wetness and ambiance of my tone without having to use multiple delays and reverbs or switch snapshots or patches.

This is probably the most flexible and versatile “direct to board” rig I’ve ever had, while being extremely easy to use.

Many thanks! This gives me a good look at how others are getting it done.

FWIW, the Truetone CS-line of power supplies can provide enough juice to get rid of that awkward adapter that Line 6 includes. It just depends how many other pedals you intend to run on the board, but with the Stomp, you won't need many...

Good point. I have a Voodoo labs power supply and they have a cable specifically for connecting the HX Stomp or HX Effects. Probably they have something for the new Stomp XL. It allows me to power everything with just the one power supply.

FWIW, although the HX Stomp states 3A current draw requirement, it actually uses significantly less, so some power supplies can work fine. Given the XL has the same innards + those additional switches, I expect its the same draw as well.

Yep - the HX Stomp and the HX Effects Botha specify 3A, I think, but are easily powered with 1.6A. I use 2 - 800ma plugs on the VooDoo Lab Digital power supply, as instructed by VooDoo labs and it has always worked flawlessly.

That is slick. And inspiring.

So, I returned the Stomp XL yesterday. I lost output (totally cut out) and had to restart it to get any sound out of it. I started searching up the issue and it seems like many have had the same happen (more so with the smaller Stomp). I had done all of the usual: firmware update to 3.11, checked all cables and headphones, etc. I’m going back to the Helix LT. I’ve played one for three years and after a few days, I’m already missing it. The grass is not always greener.

Well - I’ve never heard of that issue with the stomp, but yeah - that’s kind of a deal breaker! The LT is awesome and can do all the Stomp XL does and more anyway - at least you know now!

Lol yeah, so I basically lost about $150 in this whole process but will have a brand new LT to last me another 4-8 years. Lesson learned!
