Show me your cherry necks!

I haven’t seen too many cherry necks, and I’ve been curious about it. I bet cherry would be a great wood for a neck. Anyone have any photos they’d like to share?

I made a cherry strat neck in the early 80's but digital cameras didn't exist that year. It makes a nice neck. Martin used it on some models years ago.

None of my builds has a cherry neck, but I'd not hesitate to use it...it cuts beautifully and will work similar to maple. it just not quite as hard. QS cherry can be really eye catching, too, and the same for figured cherry.

As Jim said, cherrywood is nice to work with. Slightly softer than maple. Router bit burns, if not new/sharp, or stop a one spot too long.

Right, surplus body I refinished black, DIY cherrywood neck, finished natural with wenge fingerboard. A slight bit of sapwood on the edge of the neck which looks nice.

Tele has ribbon mahogany body & custom cherry control cover.

Strat finished clear water base, Tele clear nitro.

Baritone conversion neck. 28.625 scale.
Surplus body, DIY neck, flamed maple/cherry/flamed maple. Cherry binding, wenge fingerboard. Oil finish.

What’s the weight like on cherry vs. maple? I’ve been able to lighten a body by removing material, but not sure about making a lighter neck…

I have made a couple with cherry necks. I love cherry for the neck. It’s smooth and closed pored, so it finishes silky. It’s softer than maple so it shapes easier. Nothing wrong with it. Use qs

Here is what I have found on the WWW.

“Air-dried American cherry wood (Prunus serotina) ranks 34 pounds per cubic foot. Air-dried American maple (Acer saccharum) clocks in at 47.1 pounds per cubic foot. There are different types of oak. Red oak (Quercus rubra) clocks in at 48.7 pounds per cubic foot, while American white oak (Quercus alba) is 56.2 pounds per cubic foot. So, comparing maple vs. cherry wood is easy, as maple is denser than cherry by nearly a quarter.”

You won’t notice the weight differential in the neck. It’s the body that impacts the weight. A cherry or maple body will be heavy to the avg user. A cherry or maple (or walnut or mahogany ) neck doesn’t make an appreciable difference to the weight in my experience.

Wow thanks for posting these great looking necks, guys! It’s really inspiring - I might have to build me a cherry neck soon! I just scored some mesquite fretboards from a guy and I’m feeling the pink/orange and golden brown combo.
