De Raggende manne (The raging men) were a hardcore band from the Netherlands with a penchant for short songs.

Here's a couple of their shortest with a translation of the lyrics.

Yo.
I want snow this year, dump loads of snow this year
Snow this year
I want snow this year, dump loads of snow this year
Snow this year

So do we!

I want snow this year, dump loads of snow this year
Finally, some overdue snow this year
I want snow this year, dump loads of snow this year
So give me snow this year, understood?

Sideways, streets, rooftops, and trees
Coated in snow
Coated in snow
Covered completely in snow

Bell, more bells and whistles
As much as you can think of
Bells and whistles coated in snow

The whole thing covered in snow
So gimme snow this year, understood?

"I like you
Yeah, I think you're really nice
But your breath is worse than a bear out of his @$$"

And here's their six second magnum opus...

"Nah, that's nothing."

Interesting. Makes me think of the Hives.

I remember in the 80s when hard-core punk songs that were super short we’re a thing. There was this band in California called Sticky and they had a song on their cassette album called, “No.“ It was listed as 3 seconds long. It was basically the entire band playing one chord/note/beat and shouting, “No!” I thought it was pretty funny at the time… Still do. That’s the shortest song I’ve ever heard.

Joe joined the fray. Listen to the high hat:

Do you guys remember why these miniatures exist in the first place? It was the problem of inner groove distortion. Vinyl records are a velocity-based storage system. While the revolution rate of the record is stable, the medium velocity lowers from the outside of the record to the inside because the circumference of one revolution continually shrinks. The slower the relative movement of the medium, the lower the headroom. A too loud or too dense last song would distort and sound ugly. Too long an album side would enter the ugliest region of distortion. However, a well-loaded album side looks shy of music.

Soooo... In the '70s, producers urged musical artists to come up with simple, quiet, sparse, short songs to fill out the inner groove with as little distortion as possible. They were still distorted, but it was less noticable to the average listener. People like me, then a future recording engineer/producer, agonized through the inner groove miniatures, especially because they were often wonderful, beautiful little things. I remember the repeated moments of wonder when the full-fidelity of these songs was revealed when the albums were released on CD. Joe's was one of them.

"Slipsteam" on Aqualung. 45 seconds if you don't count the cheesy outro, and "Wond'ring" Aloud at 1:53 (I may have to relearn that one).
