Hey there. A shoegaze/nugaze band asked me to write some riffs for their band. I'm currently using a strat or tele into a crunch box distortion, marshall vt-1 and seymour duncan deja vu delay to my newly acquired ac30.

I was thinking about getting a reverb pedal because it seems that's "THE TONE" alot of guys use in this genre of music. Any suggestions on which reverb pedal to get or any other suggestions of other effects I should consider?

Thanks,

not to be that guy, but a tank sounds pretty awesome for this kind of music. and i like fuzz more than distortion for this stuff, although the difference is kind of subjective.

The Cathedral does alot of things that would be useful in that genre. I'm sure the Hall of Fame from TC would be good as well.

There are alot of good fuzzes, IMO. I love the tone wicker Big Muff. The Devi Ever stuff is pretty much designed for Shoegazer's. The Hoof fuzz from Earthquaker is nice.

I'm not to big into Show-gazer type music, but the last band I saw like that had a rig like this:

70s Telecaster Custom (Black of course)->PROCO-RAT->EHX-DMM->EHX-Holy Grail->18 Watt Marshall->Shure->PA.

Loud, droning and whiney, perfect for Shoe-gazing.

Thanks guys. I've been eyeing off some devi-ever stuff, and those big muffs sound pretty good. I guess i should go practice some riffs instead of looking at pedals though haha.
Thanks again

1. Fuzz

2. Reverb

3. Play whilst holding the trem arm and bend it down ever so slightly at the beginning of a chord

Instant shoegaze!

For that ambient shoegazer reverb effect you want the "WET".
(link removed)

This is the ultimate Shoegaze pedal. I'm saving up for one myself because I've found no better sounding reverb pedal in all my searches of the interwebs.

MXR Blue Box. It makes playing the guitar a game, because you never have any idea what the heck that fuzz plans on doing. Add some reverb and you are home.

Also, check out some of the pedals by Mid-Fi electronics. They make some off the wall stuff that would fit well in shoe-gazing tracks.

Check out the TC Electronics Hall of Fame Reverb or a EHX Holy Stain which has fuzz, reverbs and tremolo in one box. I would say a Big Muff or even the Devi Ever Shoegaze pedal would work too.

I was also gonna suggest the Holy Stain because you'll get 2 verbs to play with and you can also try some light temelo on parts as well which sounds great in long drawn out shoegazy stuff. Also it'll let you switch back and forth quickly between fuzz and ODto see what sounds best. Not sure if it'll work in this context, but another fun thing with the HS is using the pitch shifter with the mix at 12 oclock and the amount (ie. the shift in this case) just ever so slightly off axis at 12 oclock - gives it a doubled up, synthy sound.

Multiple delays set to crash into each other will get you close, too. I use a MXR Carbon Copy and a Boss DD-5. I'm in the market for a reverb pedal for my board, but I've had great success using fairly simple reverb plug-ins when recording or playing direct into my computer.

And dear Lord that WET reverb - wowza! If I ever want to put a studio-grade reverb on my board that might be the one!

As a huge fan of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver (the best!!), Ride and the likes, I used to record a lot of that style just on my four track, and I always found that a two pickup guitar (Jazzmaster, Jag, Tele!) with both pickups on through an amp with slightly scooped midrange with a decent amount of gain (but not necesarrily fuzzed out to high heaven) can sound pretty huge, and the subtle tremolo shimmers do a lot to get that warped record sound. Adding reverb or delay multiplies the hugeness, of course! Just 2 guitar tracks with this approach (doubling the same part) panned left and right can sound enormous.

I think the Electro-Harmonix Cathedral Stereo Reverb will do all you would ever want for Shoegazing concerning reverb.

+1 Electro Harmonix Reverb has a great sound for this stuff. I use a Holy Grail, but the Cathedral or even Holy Stain, will get you to some pretty far out places. I have to say, Devi-Ever puts out a great line of fuzzs, one of which is a dual circuit model, of course called "Shoegazer".

I went and got a Yamaha Magicstomp for reverb.

It's K Shields in a stomp and has all the gated and reverse reverb that you need and some great delay as well. I still can't get my head around all of the settings available. I don't know what half the adjustments do.

I've also found distortion a little better than fuzz, at this stage anyway.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll be definitely checking out all those pedals you listed.

Just to clarify for Justin. Nugaze is a kind of a newer version of shoegaze. Bands like these guys- who are also australian ;)
