And:

"So who is Bonnie Raitt? Shock moment blues singer beats Beyonce, Adele, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar and more to win coveted Song of the Year award at Grammys (and even she can't believe it!)"

It is only UK journalists who apparently are unaware of Bonnie Raitt? The Daily Mail writer describes her as the "surprise winner" and called it an "upset win." I suppose that if you are an underpaid 25 year old writer who really doesn't know much about music, it is possible that you could be surprised.

Sorry y’all. Flame away. This was a huge miss by the academy and your kids will be talking about this moment the exact same way we all talk about the whole Jethro Tull “metal” episode.

Raitt is a living legend. But she’s not been impactful on music in any way in over 30 years. May as well have given the award to Paul McCartney or Rod Stewart. Nothing Bonnie Raitt published on her “Just Like That” album is memorable or has any particular shaping on the year in music.

She’s a legend. But this was not deserved. Clean miss.

Should have given her a lifetime achievement award. But not song of the year. That was ridiculous.

The award was for a song. “Just like that” is a great song. It’s hard to listen to without choking up.

This isn’t a lifetime achievement award. It’s recognition for a specific song.

The one with REAL talent won.
But an unknown?!? Not surprising.
Every one the other nominees is a mega talent and relevant. (Adell is annoying, but still).

Bonnie is also a talent, she was relevant in the 80s or something like that, she’s a helluva guitarist. But she’s not relevant today and no more talented than the others… just more experienced.

I have to add an edit: I don’t listen to much pop music… but I am pretty sure Beyoncé and her work with Destiny’s Child and solo, and Taylor Swifts ability to dominate pop charts, country charts, alternative charts, and all… they can sell out stadium after stadium… I don’t know, but they are doing things that you could use the word legendary for. I don’t listen to them. But when I see them on TV or YouTube or the like, it’s easy to recognize they have Uber talent.

CLEARLY, it was worthy of "The Song Of The Year," and it is indeed memorable. What was your choice? Oh, and by the way, she already has the Lifetime Achievement Award.

OK, I'll bite. Please explain exactly why Bonnie Raitt is "not relevant."

The Grammy Awards are not a fan popularity poll. The award votes come from the members of the Recording Academy, who are performers, producers, songwriters, managers, etc. Sales do not figure into the qualifications for "Song Of The Year." The right song won.

It’s an OK song written by a living legend that won’t sell 1M through the end of time.
Agree to disagree, my opinion is this was a massive miss.

I maybe see a point in an artist hanging a gold record on a wall, it is a quantifiable achievement. But these types of awards are as arbitrary and meaningless as the RRHoF.

I just listened to the song. Nice. If someone else had written and sung it, it might have sounded calculated and schmaltzy. But she pulls it off. She brings a John Prine-like authenticity to it. And, of course, tasteful understated lead lines. Speaking of folkies, she has a little Lucinda Williams vibe in her vox too.

The awards are too diverse now for it to ever make sense. They were each probably more worthy than each of the others for some reason. I think in the end, the Academy probably awards based on which demographic they are trying to attract. Bonnie Raitt fans are probably losing interest in the Grammys lately.

The worst part of the Grammys was the token "Social Change" award. While that Iranian song was indeed important and relevant in the global context, it was just such egregious and awkward pandering at the Grammys.
