Need some advice on getting shipping boxes for gear. Way back when eBay was a good place to sell gear you could go in GC and they would give you boxes. Not as much anymore. Even a local music store wanted to sell me a box for shipping a guitar. I have jury rigged some boxes in the past and have had some luck with that but haven’t sold a lot of stuff online lately. Selling stuff on Craigslist is like a garage sale, people wanting something for very little. So I have to resort with online sites but finding good shipping boxes is expensive. Any suggestions?

Buy a new guitar online and ship your old guitar out in the new box. Win/Win.

StewMac has shipping containers you can buy. They're not very expensive but look like they'd be secure.

Great suggestions. Thank you. Some so obvious I didn’t think of them!

Check with your local hardware store, certain times of year when they get rakes and/or snow shovels. Ask them to hold them for you. It surprises me a bit that places that sell boxes never have a box to fit a guitar well, I think people would pay $8-$10 rather than roll your own.

Guitar boxes are easier to find then a good amp box. Uline is expensive but a good quality. Time to start dumpster diving!

Bike shops have a variety of sizes depending on the bike. My boss would try to chisel $ out of everyone that asked despite us throwing them away.

Gun stores that sell rifle/shotgun cases. Those are wide enough for a guitar. Put an add on CL for boxes in the Music Instruments for sale page. Many of those folks are home dealers and sell off boxes once in a while. I have two right now but you aren't in the same area code.

One time for a guitar I shipped, I taped 2 Velux skylight boxes together, and duct taped 2 inch foamboard around the guitar. Took me about 2 hours, but it arrived safely.

Yeah, it can be time consuming. I save boxes for that. For amps etc often you can take two boxes, cut one side off and overlap them (slide one over the other) creating a double box close to what you need. Also, for big thick cardboard to make your own box, look behind appliance stores or sporting stores.

wait untill GC closes and go dumpster diving , I have great standing with Long& Mcquade so I get almost any thing I need from them , but they throw out a ton of boxes and I assume most large music stores do the same .

I have purchased guitar boxes, several times, from Uline, with no issues. Works out to $12 and change per box - and you get a properly sized, properly constructed shipping box.

If you feel bad about paying for boxes, then pass the cost on to the buyer. No biggy - and I doubt he'd flinch over you adding a "Hamilton" to the price.
