No they're not, underneath is a single coil with 2 rows of screws each side that do absolutely nothing. The bridge wasn't earthed at all from the factory, so it buzzed a lot. See I drilled a hole from underneath the bridge to the wiring cavity and soldered in an earth. What a difference, so much quieter.

    Cool

That’s what I thought, a lot of those “department store” type guitars had single coils hidden under covers that made them appear to be what they aren’t

The hump in the center kind of gives it away, I figured there was just a blade or poles in the center under there

What does the “R/S”(?) switch do?

    I would guess at 'Rhythm / Solo'...maybe?

Some guys go nuts for these Japanese canoe paddles from the 60's..I'm not one of those.

Nice find, though. Anything old is generally cool.

The switch bypasses the tone pot when in S which I guess stands for solo. Actually it works pretty good.

i love all these things...i bet the pickups actually sound nice...im sure they sold those as "audition" guitars in woolworths over here...i loved em ...had one from early 70s with one pickup in middle ..you could get the action on it as low as you like...had a few others.including a fully hollow 2 pickup one i got for £10.in the mid 80s.what a nice and lucky find....keep it original though...tomorrows antique...many unloved ones have been lost to rubbish heaps and landfills....they will be as rare as hens teeth

Some of these 60’s era Japanese guitars have a....

    RIZM/SOLO switch.

I always wanted to play RIZM.

    That Awesome.
I have a similar one that I rebuilt for Slide.

People are paying crazy money for these old guitars now.
