    thanks for the tip... looking up the lyrics now. knopfler is an underrated lyricist. romeo? brothers in arms... I'll add this one to my list!

    "You can't lose what you never had."

    Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart co-opted the lyric somewhat and morphed it into "you can't lose a friend you never had" in their hit song "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight."

    Shakespeare's "every dog has his day" line from Hamlet is worked into the lyrics of the song "Misfits" by the KinKs.
