Just got a 72 thinline body and the pocket is shallow. Saddles are maxed out and it looks weird. I am going to route it down to 5/8” depth. Any suggestions on which bit to use? Top bearing bit I know, but what else?

If you want to try something non-surgical first, try shimming the neck pocket to lower the strings. Just takes a minute, and it might be all you need.

Two options, a shim at the entrance of the neck pocket, or route the pocket to correct depth. A shim at the entrance will be visible.

To route the pocket you will need to make a template to route the full pocket safely as the pocket floor extends past the sides the router base would rest on.

Well, I think I fixed it without major surgery. I noticed I could see the screws between the neck and the body when I went to pull the neck off. I enlarged the screw holes in the body so the screws would slide right through. Put the neck back on and strung it up. It is light years better.

Turns out I was having crappy contact between neck & body. It is at a place where I am happy with it and will leave as is. Now I just need my wrhb’s to show up!

Sometimes when the body screw holes are still tight and lightly threaded, you'll have to get the 4 bolts to where the tips of the screws just start to thread the neck heel holes and then turn each screw sequentially, instead of each screw completely screwed in individually, the process is rotating around the 4 screws 1/4 to 1/2 turns at a time to keep the neck heel bottomed in the neck pocket. And that might be because the neck heel holes threaded at a slight angle and the binding is enough to lift the neck from the bottom of the neck pocket. The bass guitar I have has that issue.
