Howdy all! First off, what a cool corner of the internet y'all have here...happy to have stumbled across it:)

Quick question: Was there a bit of variation in the ways in which Fender stamped the serial numbers on the American Special Tele's over the course of that model's lifecycle? I ask because I recently purchased one off of CL, and while trying to figure out exactly what year it was made, noticed that it's not stamped in exactly the same way as others that I've seen online. It seems usual that the serial # begins with a "US", than followed by the number itself (e.g. US123456). The guitar that I purchased looks identical to every other American Special I've seen, but is lacking the US prefix. Cause for concern, or just one of the ways in which Fender got 'er done? Any comments appreciated! Bryn

Excellent info, and much appreciated! It does appear to have an extra digit, but seems more likely to be human error than anything more sinister, eh? Thanks again for that fantastic link!

    What extra digit?
10 followed by six digits is spot on.

You're totally right! That'll teach me to go off half-cocked without slipping on the readers (sucks to get old). :)
