    Selling a Fender amp.

First of all, how do I use PayPal for the transaction?

Second, anything I should be leery about?

    NO NO NO NO
you could/will lose amp and money
paypal has no problem return of money to buyer, great for buyer if legit problems, not good for seller if buyer is liar and or thief.
buyer: "I didn't receive amp" or "it wasnt as advertised"
paypal: "OK here is money back".

Why would you want to use PP for a CL transaction if you're the SELLER?

    Or are you shipping?

Don't do it. Sell local, and take cash only.

    Edit:

If someone's mom or something wants to pay for it for the "buyer" and the buyer wants to pick it up locally, have them do a PP money transfer not connected to the "sale" of an item.

First, if you don't have a paypal account, you'll need one to receive money. If you have a paypal account, you're already set to receive money.
Second. What to be leery about. See the post by xafinity.

PayPal for a local CL purchase :

1.) I've used it many times.
(I have a PayPal no fee debit MasterCard so I like money in my PayPal account.)

2.) I meet the person with the item I'm selling.

    3.) He likes the item.

4.) He signs into PayPal and sends me funds under "friend/family" - NOT "goods and services" - with no notation/message/greeting/"for pedal"/anything.

5.) I check my phone and look for the "you have money !" email.

6.) When I see the email , I say "Bye, thanks ! And he says "Bye, thanks !" And leaves.

7.) if you can replicate that exact process - you're fine. If not , take cash.

The whole point of CL is that cash is king. If he can't get to a bank on a weekend maybe PP makes sense.

I agree with everyone's input thus far. I would take paypal for a pedal if the buyer wanted it shipped. I would add shipping to the price. THEN I would wait for paypal payment. THEN I would immediately transfer to my bank (which is free) AND I would NOT ship until the payment cleared my bank. I have personal experience with a fraud: payment made, I was getting ready to ship but hadn't yet, when the payment simply disappeared a couple days later with no record of it ever being made.

now, an amp: If I wanted to ship and I wanted seller protection, I would sell on reverb or ebay marked with local pickup only or add appropriate shipping.

I repeat : "Friends/Family" option (payor has to select it manually-default is "Goods/services") takes care of everything.

No fees for payor or payee also.

I extend this courtesy to all of my good fiends on the CL who make a purchase from me. Anyone over 50 years of age who is accompanied by their grandparent can use some other means than cash to pay me. Anyone else it's cash on delivery.

What Mike said. Nothing out of the ordinary taking Paypal on a CL deal. Just do it like he outlined.

He can use PP but not an ATM machine? If it's local I would avoid.

So both of you can avoid carrying $1000+ in cash in your pocket?

One is carrying $1,000 worth of gear to start with. And you don't know the buyer.

I wouldn't trust PP in a million years for this. It's fishy to start with if we're not even talking about SHIPPING!

$1,000 in $100 bills is just as huge as $10 in $1 bills.

SELL LOCAL AND TAKE CASH ONLY!!!!!!!!!

I've never been burned on CL, and this is why. But I can't count the horror stories I've heard from those that didn't abide by this rule.
