I just more or less finished writing one with a friend.
    First verse:
My red guitar's in the pawn shop
The black face amp needs tubes
And this old thing hasn't had new strings since I stole a set from you

It started out to be humorous but as we delved into it the song became darker and darker...Ending with:
    Dreams that never last

A Fender CS guitar is self-depreciating, for example, so yes.

How about Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks? I'd say that a big % of their catalog revels in a lack of success.

    These are a couple of my favourites from the aptly named album "Bankrupt";

Ahh! Lyrics that only a TDPRIer can relate to. So it’s destined for platinum status!! :D

This one is in Français, but about as self-deprecating as it gets.

I started out with nothing and I’ve still got most of it left; surely this wins the thread!

Ray Davies (as usual) has a sophisticated take on it... from 1970! Don't know why the vocals seem to be buried on a remastered version, so here are the lyrics too...

    Get Back in Line
    The Kinks
Facing the world ain't easy when there isn't anything going
Standing at the corner waiting watching time go by
Will I go to work today or shall I bide my time
Cause when I see that union man walking down the street
He's the man who decides if I live or I die, if I starve, or I eat
Then he walks up to me and the sun begins to shine
Then he walks right past and I know that I've got to get back in the line
Now I think of what my mamma told me
She always said that it would never ever work out
But all I want to do is make some money
And bring you home some wine
For I don't ever want you to see me
    Standing in that line
Cause that union man's got such a hold over me
He's the man who decides if I live or I die, if I starve, or I eat
Then he walks up to me and the sun begins to shine
Then he walks right past and I know that I've got to get back in the line

    Songwriters: RAYMOND DOUGLAS DAVIES

I always think of these songs as a matched set. (Mike Dowling is such a great player, of whom Jethro Burns said, "When Mike's on the tour, I don't bring a guitar. You don't take the game warden fishing.")

    Been watching so much TV
I'm thinner than I should be
    I'm like a waterlogged ball
That no-one wants to kick around anymore
    An all day morning hair-do
That no comb can get through
    It's all granola and beer
A calling card and a silk cut souvenir
