Today in 1960, John, Paul, George and Ringo recorded together for the first time, backing Rory Storm and the Hurricanes bassist Lu Walters(Walter Eymond) - described by George Harrison as "a guy who thought he was a singer" - on a rendition of George Gershwin's' Summertime'.


Allan Williams paid for the session at Hamburg's small Akustik Studio. Stuart Sutcliffe was there but didn’t participate, and neither did Hurricanes guitarists Ty Brian and Johnny Byrne. Pete Best was somewhere else, doing his own thing.


Although at least a half dozen 78rpm acetate discs were cut, none have surfaced... yet.

Rory's'61 Strat, here with the first owner Jim Conlon of the Royal Showband. He wanted a Red one like Hank Marvin. So then, as we all know in 1963 Rory got the guitar from Michael Crowley of Crowley's Music shop in Cork. Donal told a fabulous funny story, I never heard before. OK we know Rory was obsessed with the guitar and spent hours gazing at it in the shop window. Price tag was 100 pounds, a small fortune those days, literally, But Rory told Michael don't worry my Mother has it, we will work something out on a HP payment plan. So Michael gave him the guitar to bring home to try. So Rory and Donal walked home with the guitar. I guess on a huge high but with butterflies in his tummy wondering about the heart failure his Mother would have, when he asks her to buy it. So he hid it under the bedwell out of her sight. I laughed with this image, it must have been like the kids in that movie, hiding ET in the closet. Fast forward a few days later and Michael bumps into Monica (Rory's mum) and asks her, "which HP payment plan suits you for the new guitar. "What new guitar" she responded. Imagine being a fly on the wall at the Gallagher's when she returned home. However somehow Rory convinced her that with this guitar he could play both Rhythm and solo lead guitar and get paid twice, as two players! She knew somehow his heart was set on it and she agreed to a HP plan which she thought she'd never get out of debt, paying it off, cause it was a crazy amount of money. So the rest is history
