This picture is after the family forced him to get a crew cut, basically humiliating him.
There was an interesting documentary on Showtime last year (or year before), which went into this.
I have always been fascinated by photos of him in The Yardbirds that show him with a crew cut, because by then, musicians were wearing long hair and he was always very fashion conscious.
He was already becoming the guitar hero of London, yet here he is with a 50's crew cut.
It seems he was still living at home and the family took him to a barber and made him cut off all his hair. It was a humiliating experience for him, and it tells you so much about his early history with his family, and maybe explains some of his later day anger.
Back a number of years ago, when VH1 had "Behind the Music," it looked to me as if they got the same woman to play Agnes Carpenter, Barbara Gibb, and Clapton's mother. (Carpenters, BeeGees)
That might explain they way he looked when he was in Cream. I would have thought it would have taken more than 3 years to grow hair that long.
