Try a nos 12AY in V1 and maybe v2..
Speaking from experience, a more efficient speaker will almost certainly make the most difference in clean volume. I have an Eminence Hempdog (103 dB) in a 79 DR, and it’s just ridiculously loud.
This led to the opposite problem for me. I WANTED a little breakup. So I resorted to the old trickaroo (Pull the normal channel 12AX7 and use it as the PI). Now my particular amp (result may vary) hits the sweet spot (for me) at about perfect live, small gig levels.
But, again, for your solution... high efficiency speaker. I don’t know whether I’d recommend the Hempdog... unless you find your amp too trebly for your liking. It definitely fixes that problem.
Just like Hatfield 92 said, Higher efficiency speakers will improve you clean head room, every 3dBin sensitivity is like double the power. The big question which speakers get for the tone you are looking for.
Go to www.thetubestore.com check amp tube package deals. the have 3 options all figured out for a "Fender Vintage 68 custom reverb amp. and they have great customer service you can call that can answer your question better than i can. I checked it out man there is like 6 pre amp tubes , 2 power tubes and a phase inverter in your amp . if this is true it will cost ya about $200 to replace all the tubes unless you spring for there ULtimate upgrade package. you dont have to buy the package just get an ide of what tubes to choose. a $100 v1 preamp tube will do wonders.
I deal with them often. Twice this week. Yep, good guys/gals. No NOS power tubes, but all the current production tubes, and NOS rectifiers, 12AX7's and others.
check out Menifee_Audio store on Ebay. Lots of old power tubes EL84's and others.
