Looking at an online auction for a left-handed Epiphone Sheraton. The seller has a little bit of feedback (80ish transactions), and it's all positive. But the guitar has a couple of flags for me. First, the pickguard does not look to be stock Epi (although I could be wrong about this). The bigger concern is that the serial number on the sticker has been damaged (see photo below).

I'm not sure how a factory sticker would get damaged like this, unless it is intentional. What do you guys think?

I think we'd need more pictures before making any claims but one has to ask who would make an Epiphone knock off?

Don't know why anyone would bother faking a Epiphone Sheraton but i can see your point about the sticker why the serial is like that is very strange

Stolen sounds pretty likely to me.

What parts of the serial number are visible say it was built at the Peerless factory in Korea in December, 2004.

Pickguards from that era aren't particularly consistent and may even be different on lefties. I have a 1998 Joe Pass Emperor with a worn guard and found that OEM replacements are near-impossible to come by. (Fortunately, my dad, who first owned the guitar and was hard on pickguards, bought a replacement that I found in with his stuff.)

One possibility for the scroonched-up serial number is that the guitar was refurbished and resold by MIRC. They replace the OEM serial number with their own on a brown sticker that looks like this:

    mirc.png

I don't know if MIRC destroys the OEM serial number when they apply theirs, but they do also stamp "USED" somewhere on the guitar, usually on the back of the headstock. The shape of the goop around the one you're looking at looks about the right size for a MIRC sticker.

There's definitely fake epiphones out there. One explanation I've read for it is that they're mainly aimed at asian markets where even an Epiphone can be out of many people's price range.

The OP's picture definitely looks like there was a sticker like Blrfl shows, and it was then removed. Whether for fraud or innocent reason is impossible to say, but could be stolen for sure.

It's probably a factory second that had another serial covering the original one. I'm not 100% sure that Epiphone does this, but I've seen it on other Asian made guitars.

Something was done to the number, and there's no positive reason for that. (The only innocent one I can conceive is the classic "the sticker fell off" defense.) The most likely scenarios have been mentioned and are not proper. Plenty of people would say so what, and buy it, but it seems ethically questionable to make such a purchase.

Now I'm looking at this on a laptop with a decent screen I think the sticker story is most likely, I can see residue and lint on the rest of the SN.

It appears to be stolen at some point in it's life if you ask me. No way the label would get damaged like that and coincidentally be right on the serial number.

OK, this is very interesting info. I had never heard of MIRC before, and it's quite an operation. Thanks for this knowledge.
