...at your workplace? And, not in a joking-around way...What would you likely do?
I anticipate lots of "knock him on his butt " responses, but, going beyond and deeper into that, try to keep in mind that you have to try to get along and work alongside people

I would have them fired. And, probably arrested.

Its bully behavior and there isn't but one way to deal with it.

I should add to the scenario that you should also imagine you are neither fearful or intimidated by this individual. Granted, that kind of takes the "threatening" out of it...

Take a dive and then sue. Totally indefensible on his part.

Handle him in private - definitively. Then set the ground rules for your future working relationship.

I agree it's bullying behavior. I'm not positive I am clear on the way to deal with it, though

this is how i was taught.....
a person can say anything under the sun to you and you do nothing.
but the very second a person lays hands on you, you come down on that person hard and fast and make them wish they had not done it.
it doesnt matter when or where.

Having a witness is the key here to having many options at all.

I'd notify the higher ups, get it on paper, and if it happens again notify management and call the police. But, behind the scenes, I'd tell him if he ever put his hands on you again he'd be putting his health in jeopardy.

I'm a big believer in personal space, regardless of intent. You get in my personal space I get edgy...
Take that further and personal space infraction plus threats will cause things to get Western.

That is what managers and HR departments are for in the workplace. There will be consequences in today's society no matter what you do. I had to deal with it a couple of times in my company over the years. ALWAYS ended up with somebody losing their job.

Let me just say that as an employer, if this at a place of work, they are fired, do not go past go do not collect $200.

so you would be ok with someone putting their hands on you?
defending yourself against bullies, or anyone else is not " being tough".

    inevitably.

Thing is, I actually like this guy, as a person, despite this crap. And, I don't want him to lose his job.
I don't want to have to put up with disrespect, though.
And there are lots of dynamics at play here, he's a long term full time employee with the company, and I'm a lowly contractor whose contract expires in a couple years.

start the paper trail and give the boss a heads up

you're probably not the first to be accosted, and probably not the last

anger issues take a long time to address
