The band is in their 49th year, I believe Ray Benson is the only original member left but the guy playing Steel could have been in the band way back when.

In any event the line up was terrific, piano, drums, stand up bass, female fiddler that sang quite a bit another fiddler that also played an electric mandolin and a reed guy that played clarinet, alto and baritone sax. The steel man played an alto too on one song and even took a solo.

Nearly everyone was wireless the exceptions were piano and steel.

Ray played a Collings CL series most of the night. He broke a string after he played a few songs on his bucker Tele but I have to say the collings sounded better. His voice is still very strong. IMG_0560.JPG

    They’re still great!
I first saw them in 1977, at the old Soap Creek Saloon.
They were astounding, and I developed a crush on then singer Chris O’Connell.
I’ve seen/heard them man, many times since.

I've been a fan since the 70's too.

One of America’s great treasures. I too have been a fan since the ‘70’s; seen them many times and they always bring it.

Count me in as another Wheelie. Great band. Ya'll are luckier than me, though--I've been a fan since the 70s but have never seen 'em live.

I know Ray has played Merlefest at least once--and that must have been one of the only years I missed Merlefest.

I love me some Western Swing!!! I grew up on one side of the Red River and have lived on the other for 20 years. It's like religion around these parts. Ray gets it!

First time I saw them in the 70's they played in a grocery store parking lot. They've sure paid some dues!

Saw them about fifteen years ago in KC at a restaurant show. Ray made his tele look like a uke he was so big. They were great although I was sad to see that most of the people had no idea who they were. They called them the “country band” lol

Same, here! Wish I'd seen them last night!

With less than 50 albums remaining from my youth, 'The Wheel' is a very good one, and it's followed me ever since!!!

In the middle to late 80s I got to record with Larry Franklin in Houston when he was the Wheel's fiddle player. Incredible musician and a nice guy to top it off. He not only played fiddle but the mandolin and tele. We even recorded one song that he had written. I got to play dobro and bass on that one. He had nothing but praise for Ray Benson and the rest of the band.

National treasure for sure! I saw them in the late 70's on the same bill with Emmylou and Jerry Lee Lewis. What a night of polished musicianship. Great to know Ray and the band are still cookin'!

Chris O'Connell was certainly a pretty girl, and an excellent singer.
Saw the Ray/Dale Watson show, and Ray is still very entertaining. Dale is no slouch, either.
I am a critical audience, and I had fun.
