I meant to post this yesterday, but got distracted commenting in other threads here (e.g., schmee's Changes in gigging thread), and with the stuff of life.
I’ve gotten a couple of gigs booked in the last few days. As the title says, same venue, two dates.
The venue is an outdoor restaurant in a nearby coastal town called Sunset Hideaway. I’ve played there numerous times in the last few years, and I’ve posted about it before here on TDPRI. Because it’s an outdoor venue, and because we South Texans are wimps about cold weather, the proprietors do not host live music from December through February.
Last Friday, Lu texted me and asked if I was available to play for them the first Friday of March, their first live music hosting of the year. Then yesterday, she texted me again and asked if I was available for April 7th. When I agreed to that booking as well, she replied,
“Perfect. See you soon. Lots of excitement getting music started. Glad you are my first show of the season.”
Of course, that was nice to hear, especially since I keep wondering how much longer I can do this gigging thing, if my hands and voice can hold out for much longer. I’m 69 years of age with aches and pains and circulation issues that are more or less expected at my age.
My vocal range and the quality of my voice is not what it was even five years ago. It hasn’t diminished to the point that I’ve had to drop certain songs from my repertoire, but I can tell the difference. I pray no one else can.
My hands have issues of their own. My pinky on my left hand sometimes “locks up” on me when I try to, say, use it to make an E7 chord. It doesn’t last long, but just affects what I play in the moment. I have carpal tunnel syndrome and circulation issues. If I try to play a medley of more than two songs, my fingers start tingling.
But I want to pick up a micro 9 to add to my carry rotation, so making enough in two gigs to pull the trigger on that was too good an opportunity to pass up.
