Whoa. These things hit 80mph. It must be the foils. I had no clue about these things.

About 25 years ago, almost bought a 14'er tri-foil. Foil on each pontoon about mid station and the third on the rudder. Waterworld baby!

But wouldn't want to hit a deadhead at any kind of speed. Boom! Foil gone and cartwheeling could be ugly.

Originally 5:
skipper, 2 grinders, flight control (controls the foils), and someone to trim the main.

They added a tactician (the 6th person) at some point to watch other boats, probably because there were too many collisions.

I had a buddy who was up on Lake Isabella back when there was actual water in it, who was passing motorboats in one of those things. He was what he called trapping out, and something broke in the mast, a cable wrapped around his leg. He ended up breaking his leg, sinking the boat, and nearly drowning, but he always said it was a heck of a ride there for a little while.

Yikes! My dad pitchpoled (endo’d) the Hobie Cat to the tune of several broken ribs from slamming into the mast. OUCH.
