Mrs. German often comments on the rather depressing tone of the songs I play. I can’t argue. Chirpy happy songs just don’t resonate with me. I’m not a totally miserable guy (I don’t think), but I can’t deny that I have a tendency to songs about unhappiness. Maybe it’s because my roots are in ‘20s/‘30s blues and jazz, and folk music with all its fabulous murder ballads. Anyway, she was bugging me with the “don’t you know any happy songs” thing the other day, and I hit her with this one. It’s unrelentingly happy in its lyrics, but two minor chords keep it from ever having a chirpy feel to it. Any other examples?

Most chipper, upbeat song I know......with obviously "down beat" lyrics.

Ooh, good one. And for an added bonus, a Flying V with a Bigsby! It’s Lonnie Mack-tastic!

Other than the twist, that would be what I’m talking about. It’s the twist that makes it the kind of thing Mrs. German scolds me for. There are probably some Chris Isaak tunes that are just what I’m thinking of, but I can’t think of them.

One of the very saddest songs I know, that many people think is very happy.
How they think that, I'll never know

This song sounds sad to me, or at least "wistful", even though it's a "christmas song" Do you hear it that way?

Hm. Looks like you're getting sad songs with happy sounds. No one reads the directions on the box anymore.

Okay, here are some reasonably happy lyrics set to reasonably sad music:

First discovered this about 2 years ago on Pandora. I really like this song! Sometimes we need a song like this.

I used to bring cassette recordings of songs I wanted to learn to my guitar teacher, and he would listen to them and write out the chords like it was a piece of cake. (Could that really have been early internet days, where you actually had to listen to songs to get the chords?). One day I brought in a song like the "rather depressing" songs you're describing – I wish I could remember which one – maybe James McMurtry or something; and anyway, as we were listing and going over it, he suddenly turns to me and says, "Can't you bring in a happy song sometime?" He taught me a lot and I'm grateful, but I realized then we weren't on the same wavelink.
