The worst part was that he was hit on the driver's side dead square as he was upside down, it bent the entire car.

Update! He's in serious condition but his injuries are not life-threatening!

NASCAR fans are so hard to talk with. You guys treat it like a sacred cow. I’m sorry to offend. From the videos it’s hard to tell the nuance of what happened.

one things for sure, I’m sticking to WRC and F1. You nascar guys are bristly.

how is asking a question a rumor? And how would said rumor kill exactly? You should learn some manners and courtesy.

Okay okay, we all make statements that aren't entirely correct from time to time. Forget it.

Taps statement and the later link are good news letting us know he is still alive. Thanks for all the news and prayers.

Yep, no reason to bicker over who was to blame, they were all racing for the finish line. Main thing is he's alive, and frankly I wasn't expecting that. Just hope his recovery is swift with no lingering issues.

That was one of the nastiest crashes I've seen in NASCAR. What really had me worried was the fuel pouring out of it after it stopped, with the small fire already going off to the side. Fortunately, the fuel was draining away from the flames. Glad to hear that the injuries are non life-threatening. Wouldn't be surprised by a concussion and a few broken bones at the minimum though.

I was watching that fuel too. How that didn't go up in a big fireball amazes me

I don't think it was fuel, the foam in the fuel cell contains the fuel pretty well even when the tank is ripped open. They run dry sump oiling systems on the cars and I think the oil tank is in the trunk area. They run 0-W5 oil so it is like water

That could be. It was still pretty frightening though.

Not a big NASCAR fan but I saw Dale Earnhardts' crash on TV, this one looked worse. Hope the safety improvements worked and saved this racers life.

Now, you guys know why I won't watch a Plate race anymore.

What people are expected to do, is to me, not what racing is about. Safety tech is why Newman will be OK and also why, when big Dale didn't use Bill Simpson's product right, it couldn't save him.

Thank goodness that Ryan (Newman) will hold his kids again. What you just witnessed, ain't worth how close he came.

Although, this was nothing compared to the Craftsman Truck crash that Geoffrey Bodine survived. That was a true miracle.

The Bodine crash was bad, but what people don’t realize is although that was also at Daytona, NASCAR was not using restrictor plates on the truck races there.

Newman was spun out by the 2nd place car … who still finished 2nd .
