Its not surprising some don't know who he is. I only found out who he is about a year ago via a pic of one of his guitars. Unless you have kids, frequent Facebook or the MSM it's easy to not have been made aware of who he is.

I'm pretty disappointed, in Adams - obviously - depending on what the truth may be, but I'm also a little surprised that the NYT would slap this on its "front page above the fold" right out of the gate. I'm no pollyanna - I study the mass media's politics as part of my day job - but I'm still taken aback by the force of what the paper is charging.

I'm reading the piece again, but it's not clear to what degree there is criminality here (so far). I expect more detail is coming soon. The last time I checked, the NYT wasn't letting readers submit comments...

I like Ryan Adams' music a whole lot. I am one of those who has seen him as a real breath of fresh creativity on the rootsy scene in the last several years. A lot of folks on TDPRI would dig his stuff in my estimation. He always seemed like an eccentric dude, but so what? I am also old enough (25 years senior to Adams) to have had MANY musical heroes who were not exactly model citizens...Still, when behavior crosses the line into the creepy sexual predator realm - allegedly - I start to feel extra squeamish. I think I need a shower...

I haven't watched television for the past eight years.

    That was a personal choice.

I still selectively take in news, music, and cultural upheavals via my computer.

I'm on top of things, but I'm selective about the quality of the things I stay on top of.

    If that makes any sense.

When I lived in Greensboro, NC I worked with a bunch of dudes who let Ryan surf their couches for a while. They didn’t have anything good to say about him. Apparently he never chipped in on rent or food but always had coke. Hearsay, but widely corroborated in that scene.

I don’t care for that super earnest alt country style anyway. Ryan and Jay Farrar can both miss me with that mess. If they keep making that face it’s gonna freeze like that.

My daughter is 14, and so are most of her friends. I like them--they're good kids, interesting, varied, like people are varied. There's no way in hell I could carry on a 2000+ text relationship with them. I mean they're fourteen, and I'm a grown man. We don't really have equivalent experiences and we're each engaged in radically different age appropriate dumb stuff. I like my students, 18-22, a lot, and respect their abilities and also the pressure they are under, but have an ongoing relationship with them? Um, no. It's unethical and creepy, but also, I don't have a 20 year old's problems and don't want those problems: I had them when I was 20, and I'm over it! You have to be warped to be 44 and having peer to peer phone engagements with a 15 year old.

I know this is a fashionable position but there are five different women reporting basically the same story. All but the minor are named, and all are quoted. The NYT saw the texts and quotes from them. They quote Adams, and Adams' attorney. This is what reporting based on care with facts looks like. What else should they do, do you think?

You could argue they should simply not report it, but reporters are supposed to...report. They don't try the guy, they don't pronounce him guilty, they give the substance of the charges being made by five different women.

He’s a public figure. This type of behaviour- albeit alleged- is newsworthy. Fair game.

And yet beloved members here like Doc Jeffery and Stephen GC Coates get convicted for child porn and appear on To Catch a Predator respectably and people have no issue with that.

    Adams has serious issues

I'd go further and say if you're 44, it's sad to go after anyone younger than 27

my daughter is 12 and knows better than to text strangers, let alone sext them, but if I found out she was, and Adams was on the other end?

I'd be on the next flight to his front door

I know one of the women in the New York Times piece. I remember about 3 years ago when she met Adams, her first album had just come out. Adams heard it and was all about writing and recording with her, even gave her an old J45. After a very brief fling she got out, he was talking marriage after knowing her for 1 week, she knew then to get away from him. He's a real scumbag, his career is over.

To your point I’ve never heard anybody bring up Waddy Wachtel’s extrême unpleasantness. It’s like it never happened. But if I recall he plead no contest to it. I think his signature LP may have even happened after that.
