    Hi all,

okay, so, I have searched relentlessly on t’internet for information on this.

looking for information on the gear used by Ry on the Get Rhythm album - specifically the songs Get Rhythm and his take on all shook up.

appreciate I don’t have a coodercaster, but I am interested in the amp sound. I suspect a Bassman 5f6 cranked…anyway, if you have inside knowledge, please share!

I don't have a Coodercaster either, nor would I want one, but that's another story.

You could do just fine with an older Gibson or Danelectro amp. In fact here's my Warmoth Tele build with Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe pickups directly into a 1955 Danelectro Model 68 Special Series D amp, dimed. I recorded it with my old iPhone 6s so there's only room ambience, no pedals.

    Regards,
    Howard Emerson

I watched four different videos of this song….four different guitars….amps??? …four slightly different sounds and all of them were identifiable as being no one other than Ry Cooder.

Pretty weird the way that works, huh?

Tone is not a fixed thing, but that doesn’t stop people from thinking A + B=C

    Best,

In this case the equation has variables…x,y,z…instead of constants like A,B,C. So, x + y + z = Ry Cooder!!!!
I like his slide work as always but especially in this one in that there is some quick, intricate little movements that exactly fit what he is feeling here…..sort of like the intricate rhythms of a good polish man’s rag!! It has been a long time since I have had a polish done by someone who know how to work that rag and make the rhythm work!

Thank you Howard, that was awesome! Lively tone and playing.

i was looking for the more aggressive sound he attained on the record, but you have given me a great start in breaking that down!

Here are two amps that Cooder has been known to use…the .Gibson is a 1956 GA40T. the Premiere is a circa 1960 MD. Super 88.

In the link above, you will see that Black and white Guyatone LB50. I owned a rare 1960 Sunburst LB50 with the Feather house brand logo on it. Take note of the Sonic blue start’s neck pickup….that is a neck pickup out of the same Guyatone LB50. Cooder will put some ‘different ‘ pickups into a guitar. He uses the pickup out of an Oahu Diana lap steel in one.
Imho, if one is going to go chasing equipment in order to try to emulate Cooder, one should prepare for a wondrous and varied journey.

That is the third model of Premier I have seen in pics or videos of Ry Cooder. That is a smaller one. The other two were one with an early Md. 88 and one with a Super 88 as I show above. Cooder has a lot of amps and instruments.

In the song video you can spot behind Ry an old silvertone (?) twin amp head - which fits the scene setup , but I don't think that's what we hearing

With that overdriven, break up bloomy sustainy yet popping tone; I don't see why Cooder would've wanted to use anything other than his Dumble..

It sounds like Cooder on his Dumble Overdrive Special to me
