Is it just me? Seems like just about every luxury car ad and every "boomer" medicine ad has an old Rock song in the background. When they first started doing that, I thought it was pretty cool. Now, they've kind of beaten it into the ground and sort of ruined some old songs, for me, that I used to really liked. Perhaps it's just because I hate all types of marketing, but I generally note who is desecrating Rock songs and make a mental note to never buy anything the sell. Weird?

The worst is when yhe song defeats the ad. Like using Detroit Rock City in a cwr ad.

Worse, using phony "bands" featuring men who can't get it up & girls who nearly soil themselves onstage.

Too much like real life. Rock is about fantasy!

    It's not just you.

But they continue to use that type of marketing because it does work.

It doesn't work on you (or me) because we're sensitive to musical choices and musical integrity because we're... musicians. I'd guess the vast majority of people on this board would agree with you... and not care for exploiting what was once meaningful music.

But the general public doesn't care. My dad is 74, and decently savvy for his age. He's not a musician (not by a long stretch). So when he hears a song being used for commercial reasons.. he loves it. I think most people in life like to hear snippets of songs that remind them of a different time, and don't care that it's part of an attempt to sell something to them.

I don't watch commercial TV, so I generally miss these things.

I skip adds and don't watch TV so I haven't noticed them. I look away from the screen and hum to myself when they try force adverts on me on YouTube.

I hate car ads and medicine ads in general.....the car ads PROMOTE irresponsible and dangerous driving, and the medicine ads push expensive and "side effect-prone" drugs, But then, I'm pretty much the Madison Ave. marketeers' worst nightmare, anyway.

You notice often they use non-original renditions, too? And completely change the feel of the song.
Like Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way", repurposed from bitter kissoff to peppy oldster-med jingle.
"Come and Get Your Love" 's jingle makeover is almost unrecognizable from the cool Redbone song

I don't mind rock music in most commercials, but I've had a bellyful of Queen music. There's a food delivery company and a cellular provider that keep playing that stuff over and over.

I think they perform a great service! We now have Roy Orbison telling us how we can get anything we want at Stop & Shop.

Well, that's all about either skirting that the original artist said no, or minimizing royalty payments, IMO
