Lucked into it. I've never seen this before. Roy Nichols' playing is about as legendary as the stories that surround this man, one of thee true bad-ass pickers from the time, or any other time. You can hear his boisterous laugh around the 3:22 mark.

Norm Hamlet on the pedal Steel guitar, and he's still on the steel guitar! Over 40 years as Merle's bandleader.

Hag and the Strangers doing the classic "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" and more:

That was great, rarely do I watch a vid thru to the end.
This is tasty, I'll take another look.

Used to watch the Porter Wagoner Show every Sat. when I was a kid.
Wish I'd had a way to tape those.
Great to see actual LIVE playing......and those great suits and 'do's.
Porter had a righteous pompadour (we used to call them "conks").......;)

The Porter Wagoner show is rerun on RFD TV, if you have access to that channel.

I grew up on Porter Wagoner and Hee Haw Saturday Nights,as well; and then Love Boat and Fantasy Island. Porter's Show had a lot of warmth to them. He missed cues, forgot lyrics, laughed during songs, and that was some twangy bunch of pickers he had with him. I think it's interesting that the Strangers were there. I can't think of another time where a singer didn't use Wagoner's band? Not saying it didn't happen, but it was pretty dang rare that somebody used their own band on that sound stage.

That's some great music. I was lucky enough to see Merle and the Strangers when I was 15. Norm and Roy were there along with Tiny Moore and if I remember right, Gordon Terry was in the band then too.
You can tell that was in Norm's early days in the band because he was playing the Fender pedal steel instead of the ZB Custom.

    Great stuff.
Merle just teasing us with how easy it is for him to sing stuff no one else can.
    Roy just snapping licks out.
    Great stuff.

Those old Capitol Recordings sound so good to me. You really get a sense of the room's space and how they mic'd it all up, even if it's totally wrong. Still, a picture of it comes to mind and the instrumentation is spare and damn near perfect...

Marty may not do another season. He gave us a lot of good country music, more than anybody in recent memory.

My family drove all the way down to Cobo Hall in Detroit to see him back in the 70s. He pulled a "no show". Luckily Marty Robbins stepped in and made up for it. I finally saw Haggard in Knoxville a few years ago and he put on a good show.

Tele salivas, Thanks for posting "I'll Put The Bottle On The Bar". I've always liked that and it shows one of many good songs he recorded that weren't released as singles. I read somewhere that song was supposed to be an answer song to "Swinging Doors". Either way that is a killer song.
And Rebel, I got to see Merle this past spring at Merlefest here in Wilkesboro. The Strangers are still top notch in every way. They and Merle put on a heckuva show.

Saddle on the tele look to be steel.
Headstock doesn't have a skunk strike plug so it's a 2 piece maple neck?

Is Roy playing a mid 60s Tele here?
