Hey folks wanted to ask something about an amp I have never played before a Roland Blues Cube -BC 60 that I found at a local pawn shop. I know nothing of how old it is and not even sure if these originally had 3 -12" speaker in them. From what I can find out on line they had one 12" in some models and and 10" in some other models. This leaves me to believe someone has installed these after the fact.
No sure what the output is for the ohms but the 3 -12" speakers look to be wired in parallel.
They want $180 and it sounds Okay but not to sure if it could of been damaged somehow from the added 3-12" speakers.
What should one check for with this mod if it s a mod for any problems or should this be put back to 1-12" or ?

Thanks

I think it’s three 10” speakers…not 12”.

Roland BC-60/310

I couldn’t find a 3-12” model referenced anywhere.

Specs:

  • Tube Logic technology for realistic vintage sound with enhanced reliability
  • 75 watts RMS
  • Three heavy-duty 10" speakers
  • Normal/Lead channels
  • Crunch and Boost switches for screaming high-gain tones
  • Three-band Tone control plus independent Presence control
  • Rectifex circuit emulates two different types of power amp rectifiers
  • U.S.-made Acutronics three-spring reverb
  • Built-in effects loop switchable between line/pedal levels
  • Designed and assembled in the U.S.A.

Those old BCs are well liked. I have the newer version. If you go to the Blues Cube owners thread you’ll see lots of great reviews if these older versions.

That's the 3x10 version of the amp that's had the 10" speakers replaced with the 12" models used in the BC-30/60. The 12" speakers are 8 ohms just like the 10s, so there shouldn't be any harm done from installing it. The previous owner might have enlarged the holes in the baffle to accommodate them, which would prevent going back to the stock speakers.

But the speaker‘s model number in the photo is V-12….and if you Google “Roland V-12 speaker“ they’re listed as 12” speakers.

I’m confused now.

I too am confused on the speakers, but tomorrow (yes Sunday) I will be picking it up for $150, the guy at the shop was real nice and just said if you want it it yours for $150 as the front cover was ripped from what looks like a cat got to it and thinking they are 12" installed also maybe a mod.
So by phone I said okay I will take it, so tomorrow after picking it up I will pull the cover and look in the back and see what is going on. I did see it earlier in the day but could not make out the inside back in the low light shop (my cell phone needs that flash light app). I will say it did sound pretty nice even if it has the wrong speakers. He did say they had a tag on the speakers that said 16 ohms on each speaker.

You guys now have me pumped up - can't wait to run my fingers thought is pretty sound.

Thanks

The factory speakers are these 10" units:

Comparing that to your picture, it doesn't look like there's room to replace those with 12s. The service manual lists the speaker label as a separate part, so maybe yours has 10s and the wrong labels were applied. That should be easy to figure out with a tape measure.

I had one of those, it's a killer amp. It can hang with a Super Reverb no prob, big and heavy like one too😁
My buddy still has my old one and it's been trouble free.

Like like a great find. I like Roland amps and have no issue at all with this one or others.

No sure what the output is for the ohms but the 3 -12" speakers look to be wired in parallel.

Yes, I was wondering that also.
I was looking at the pics and it appears to me (maybe I'm wrong, but..) it looks like (3) 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel(?) If the usual assumptions hold, that should produce a 2.67 ohm load on the output.
Is that something Roland did often? Seems a bit unusual, and I know there are some amps out lately that can handle very low impedance loads... but the 3x8ohm speaker arrangement in parallel does seem a bit atypical. Do these have a cooling fan tucked up in/near the chassis somewhere? Hmmm.

Edit: Correction. OK, I see in your later post you mention these speakers are supposedly 16 ohms each (producing a 5.33 ohm load). You should be fine in that case. Sorry, posting before the coffee kicks in.. /ugh.

Well I actually got to pick it up last night as the owner was doing inventory late so was able to swing by, so it's in my hands now.
So you guys yes it is a set of three 10" with the labels screwed up. Measured the front mount screws and all checks out as 10". That is strange for a company to do that, maybe this makes this Amp worth more, nah.
As for the amp its self I am floored by how this sounds. While in the store I had to use some very bad and cheap guitars that were available to check the sound, sounded horrible, hence thinking the speakers were the problem. Not in the least, first guitar plugged in was my Fender Thinline with the Wide humbuckers, was an instant marriage in sound and tone. This amp loves Humbuckers. Very deep punchy sound but very clear tones, and with the bright button pushed in while in normal it even gets better.
Plunged in my Telecaster single coil and thats when it all lite up, wow I wish I found one of these amps years ago, extremely versatile amp with both single coil and humbuckers, but as said handles the HB nicely.
A fast test with a peadle chain in the front proved to be better than I was thinking, very clean with very little drop or change in sound.
Not sure what year this is but the way it is built it will last many more. Yes as you guys mentioned it is heavy, will have to find some wheels for it. As for the condition of the amps cab it is like new, and the only negative was some of the knobs caps were missing, not a big deal.
I have some dark speaker covering so the face is an easy fix.
I believe I will be bonding to this amp very well and I believe it will be a welcome sound when played with the other guys.

Thanks for the information guys, I think I am now a believer in the BC-60s Blues Cube by Roland

Great score! I regret selling my 1x12 version a few years ago and have been looking for a reasonably priced replacement.
Enjoy it!

There's not room for three 12" in a real BC60 I'd have thought. And it's only 60 watts so why three speakers? BUT the label does suggest it's supposed to be a three 10" cab. So maybe all OK after all? These are pretty tough amps but who knows if it's all OK - I'd pass.
