Thinking of replacing the speaker in this amp. I managed to get it for a decent price and the stock speaker just lacks a little something for me. Looking for something a little brighter and chimier on the clean channel, and something w/ more "hair" and treble on the dirty channel, but without getting harsh (which is what happens w/ the stock speaker).

I'm looking at some Weber alnico speakers (either 30 or 50 watts), or possibly some of the Eminence Patriot series.

Is it a bad idea to replace the stock speaker on a solid state amp? Just wondering if the money would be better spent on putting towards a low wattage tube amp. Normally that's what I'd do, but the Blues Cube seems to have potential.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

replace it!!

I dont have a lot of experience with the cube30, but I do know that putting a quality speaker in a low cost amp can make a world of difference.
I had a S/S vox pathfinder, and running it through my 2 X 12 made a world of difference, it sounded like a real amp.
The Weber Alnicos are a great choice, I put one in my Reverbrocket and it sounds great...
do it, it's a relatively cheap fix, and you'll hear the difference.

I replaced the stock 10" speaker in a ss Fender Frontman with an Emi Rajin Cajin. Huge improvement in tone and headroom. So, yes...if you're not happy with the stock speaker, try a new one. Any amp SS or tube, may benefit from a speaker change.

The Emis are excellent. I spoke to a fella that replaced the stock speaker in his Roland BC-60 with a Swamp Thing and loved the results. The Webers are very good too. Good luck!
