'The best of his career' is a high bar indeed--I'll have to check it out!

    Yep!

    According to my tastes.

More dusty authentic tones... If you liked Close Ties you'll like Texas too!

I was always meh about his earlier work as whole albums. Some good cuts but could rarely get through them. These 2 are just so much better!

Give us hope that the best is yet to come as some of us climb towards 60 and beyond!

It's funny how we remember things. His 1988 album Diamonds and Dirt was a certified gold record with 5 #1 Billborard singles and had Steuart Smith on guitar and Rosanne Cash and Vince Gill on vocals.

I thought that one was pretty good.

I bought that one second-hand in a used record store here in Holland, around 2002, because I saw a song that I remembered from the car radio called "She's Crazy For Leaving". Over the years since then, it has crept up pretty close on my top favorite list.

I've been working on Rodney's stuff since the 80's. While I prefer the Steuart era, I'm always learning new phrases and chord shaping from those albums.

    A steel guitar engagment.
Just ordered Texas and Rosie Flores latest. Houston Kid is my favorite Rodney Crowell record to date.

Just checked and Houston Kid is the last one I have. Gonna give it a spin. And, looks like I’ve got a bunch of catching up to do.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

I think Rodney answered this era quite directly....on Close Ties

Silver toe tips on my boots and a mullet head of hair...in deed!

And I think Rodney's commenting on his personal behavior during that "era"...not the songs on Diamond and Dirt.

Those are two very different things.

Yeah, that's a great tune. A little useless trivia, the street mentioned in the song is no longer named Dowling and is now named Emancipation.

I used to work on the Eastside of Houston and still patronizes a few businesses there.
I've always liked Telephone Road off The Houston Kid album for a snapshot of Houston back in the day.

Don't get me wrong the album and songs are fine but for ME is mired is 1980-90's country tones. For me this was indicative of the "mullet head of hair" era.

    That's cool!

Being in Tucson it's kinda neat to hear Calexico tunes describing the region that you'd have to experience to really get.

Spinning HK right now! Been too long since I played it!

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I’m not too well versed in the depths of Crowell’s catalog, but Ashes By Now is one of my all-time favorites. The dynamics of that song speak to me in a big way. When that minor chord kicks in on “Baby! I can’t go through this again!” ... chills!
