So I have been snooping around. It seems like rock stars prefer either black, white, butterscotch, or sunburst while dentists (or other guitar enthusiasts not playing professionally) seem to prefer the custom colors, such as surf green, daphne blue, lake placid blue, shell pink etc.

    Is this impression wrong?

Based on my extensive research (actually none) I thought dentists preferred PRS and LP '59 Bursts? If they go slumming for a Tele, wouldn't it be a '52 Blackguard?

Some colors look better under stage lighting ... Performing artists would tend to prefer those ... For the at home wanker, anything goes ...

I’m no dentist but I’m sure no pro. Sunbursts, red, natural, gold, black. And one Sonic Blue. Ha.

For me, if the guitar plays well and sounds good, it's fine ...
For others, cosmetic factors and resale value and collectability factor in ...
    To each, his own ...

OP: You nailed it! Dentists obsess over pickguard colors too and must have matching straps. "Honey does my butt look big?"

I'm guessing rockstars play whatever color they like. So should the rest of us.

I’m no dentist or rock star and I’m not too concerned about color. My Annie is the two tone car color green I fell in love with back in my high school days. My SG is high gloss cherry. I couldn’t afford that one back then either. My Tele is candy apple red. I switched to an aged white 3 ply guard when I upgraded pickups. My Strat is a dark metallic gray with dark chrome hardware that I bought used. It must have been a special model somewhere. OK. Maybe color isn’t so unimportant. Or maybe I’m just content with what I have.

Four out of five dentists prefer their guitars to be enameled.

Who’s the clown with the funny painted SG? Just kidding
Personally, if the guitar plays nicely, I like the feel, & I can afford it the color is immaterial

My dentist was first a friend and fellow guitar player and his favorite guitar ever is a ~1970 Gibson LP goldtop with creme humbuckers. It got pretty damaged in a house fire after maybe 30 years ownership and he got it back playing. So I question his taste, but he ain’t much of a dentist either.

His favorite amp is the SF Super Reverb he’s had for about a hundred years so he wins back some taste points there.

Most dentists could buy all types, and LP bursts, then decide what to do with them.;)

Being the home type I have a Desertburst, Sunburst, Orange type burst, Aqua marine and black. I'm not sure what that means

I am an attorney and I love Sonic Blue. I have three Fenders with this color. I hope this helps.

What's wrong with dentists? If not for the Liverpool boy's dentist, we might never have gotten the wonderful psychedelia of Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour, 'cause it was their dentist who introduced them to LSD.
