My Yamaha RS502T arrived. I haven’t had a chance to play or even see it in person yet, but had family take delivery. The pictures they sent me shows that the flame on the top is less contrasting on one side than the other. It is worse from certain angles. These guitars are backordered everywhere and I really don’t want to wait on them to be in stock so I probably won’t return it. If it was a more expensive guitar I would. What would you do?

Don't sweat it. Wait until you feel it and play it in hand. Pictures can be deceiving anyway. You might strum it and never think of this again. So unless you have a very short return window, wait until you get to play it. Yamaha is high quality and that guitar looks good to me.

Just play it. You can’t really see the front while you’re rocking out for thousands of screaming fans with all those lights in your eyes anyhow.

But seriously, it wouldn’t bother me. If anything it’s unique.

I usually let the neck decide. If the neck feels right, everything else can be either fixed or ignored.

Since every cheap Epi under the sun has tidy regular pinmstripe flametops that are nothing more than paperthin veneers, I (for one) don't give a hoot in Hades when I see an irregularly matched top. In fact, I rather like it because I conveys lack of obsession. I also love curly flames, tiger stripe, and all the real-wood, real-world tops we used to see before the ridiculous standardization of thin, tight "flame" took over. It would never have occurred to me to think that your guitar is somehow deficient. "The Beauty of the Burst" is full of asymmetrical figured tops... on guitars that go for $150K.

If the price is great, and it feels and plays great... rock it!

I bet the neck binding feels nice - you better play it at least once!

That top is fine, better than some and not as fancy as a AAA graded top. Just as in your pics, from one angle it looks " perfect" and from another , not as great. Still is a nice top with a heck of a guitar underneath it.

I've got a few Yam electrics from late 70's and early 80's, still play great. Got a RS420 early this year just to see if they still had it, and they do! Your 502t is I guess a step up on this, dunno if the necks are the same, the 420 neck is nice to play, no thick poly.

Only new guitar ever purchased where intonation was spot-on out of the box.

You'll like it first time ya see it, and never look back.;)

it's a guitar, not a piece of furniture. all that really matters is the neck feel and how it sounds. i get that aesthetics matter somewhat, but really, all it has to be is in the ballpark.

my 335 is red and has a flame top. a flame top on a 335 is heresy in my eyes. and personally i'd rather have a natural 335. am i going to fuss over that? no, it's a great player, it doesn't matter. you take what you can get.

I would send it here to Initech for a proper, ecologically-responsible disposal. I won't even charge you, consider it a COVID-relief effort. ;)

Could be a trick of the light - wait to see it in person. Looks like a sweet guitar!

    I think it's beautiful.

    Humans aren't symmetrically-perfect.
    Why should guitars be?

I love the looks of your guitar. Even if from a certain angle there that mismatch effect.

The neck must definitely decide. Make sure it’s well setup before making the final decision.

Cameras can be very deceiving when it comes to flame tops on guitars. I've taken pics of nice ones I've had and then wondered if it was even the same guitar. What looked perfectly good to my eyes looked terrible to the camera.
