The Rivian rotates in place - half-minute video - note that they chose happy background music, not sad, and a dirt/mud surface, not pavement:

These two guys are talking about plowing snow with an electric truck vs an ICE:
skip up to 40:41 in this 45-minute electric truck comparison video

btw I heard the Lordstown truck is on very shaky financial ground - may never happen, idk

Yes on plowing, and I expect that to require a lot of battery capacity. I remember the push power electric forklifts had over ICE, and when we did rail car switching within our scrap yard with diesel/electric vs a diesel powered machine.

Outside of a lot of industrial applications we already have, new farm machine prototypes and machines are probably insights on doing work with BEVs.

Except for Tesla who did another big quarter, it seems to me like we're still going to be in 1-3 years of batteries as constraints. It would be a pleasant surprise to know that's not the case.

It appears my boss' Rivian has been delayed again but still maybe here in next 4-8 weeks.

Today's WSJ has Rivian CEO bringing up what I've long thought and still think is the biggest delay for the products. In other news since the original post we now have raw materials in the defense production supply act, and recent Wall St. Journal articles and utility firm quarterly results and calls covering grid improvements that contradict a lot of naysayers.

I don't believe this is good news for their talked about low cost model, and Tesla isn't making any noise there. After the Chinese, it may well be GM, the Korean brands and VW that win with low cost models.

When his truck arrives, we're more than ready. The first off grid charger for our sites is getting used more than I expected.

i-dont-want-to-drive-internal-combustion-cars-anymore-1850041311 <---from jalopnik.com
The author really likes EV's in spite of knowing the finest internal combustion engine vehicles.

This vague little sentence managed to raise my spirits on a cold gray morning :) ...
... from the article:
...performance EVs are achieving feats that gas cars could never. Multiple electric SUVs on the near horizon will be able to do “tank turns” to spin in place.

A Mercedes prototype - spaghetti western soundtrack - 30 sandy seconds

The Rivian tank turn feature's introduction might be delayed ??? or changed??? probably scrapped??? idk
rivian-front-dig-mode <--- from electrek.com Toyota, Ford, and GM have patented their own versions of tank turn

my lazy interpretation of "front dig mode" : immobilize* ONE of the rear wheels, the other three go forward, the vehicle rotates around the fixed, center point that is the immobilized* wheel.

*from the diagram in the electric.com link, not "immobilized" exactly, but instead RESISTANCE APPLIED. Click on the electrek.com link and figure it out for yourself! :)

I think I posted this older video upthread, anyway, 1:45 long - would you call that an EDM soundtrack? nah, too slow???

Yeah, don't want to be an early adopter. I got the 2nd model year of the 2nd generation the only time I bought a new car. But obviously I'm very tempted!

I really like and wanted one of these, seemed like they had production and all that sorted, but a year out, it's hard to know if the company's gonna make it, and the quality of the cars they're managing to produce apparently isn't great; buddy of mine back east pulled up next to one the other day and told me the orange peel down the flank was atrocious.

Not surprising, they are in a production hurry as I understand it. With my $60k+? Nah man, not yet.

My question regarding EVs is what do you do while your car is re-charging if you can't charge at home? Will the stations offer some kind of entertainment like gambling maybe?

Insane power becoming affordable. What could go wrong?

When my mother drove, she was a hard on the throttle, hard on the brakes driver. Not because she liked performance, but because she was not a good driver and did not have any finesse - at all. A Tesla or a truck like that? She would have killed herself and others.

Interesting, though.
Interesting point, my wife drives in the same way your mother drove . I replace brakes every year instead of every 3-5 yrs I would guess ?

A guy sees his boss in the parking lot getting into a really cool car, and says, "Oh...my...God...that is an AWESOME car."
The boss says, "Yes, it is. And if you really apply yourself...work like a dog...arrive early and leave late...work on weekends...I can get an even MORE awesome car."
That hit hard because I have been working long days , seven days a week . And getting nowhere fast …

Right. Why not burn coal or heavy fuel oil, or defile the country's ancient hilltops with ugly Spanish whirligigs, or generate nearly eternal toxic nuclear waste?
Between the choices, the whirligigs seem tame in comparison. The Columbia is dotted with them the whole way down the Gorge out here. I quite like them!
I’m a big hypocrite. I recently replaced my 2007 Yukon. I don’t need the massive cargo and towing capability anymore, just need a grocery getter/daily driver to keep the miles off the sports cars. A Model Y made every bit of sense. They’re expensive but I could finance a large part of it at like 1.8%.

But….. I don’t like the looks (other teslas look great imo). I don’t like the spaceship interior. I don’t like feeling like I’m driving a computer.

So I bought a 2015 Macan S that’s loaded with every luxury and performance option Porsche had available for that year. With sport exhaust, it sounds like a race car (goes pretty good too). The interior is familiar feeling, great seats that are adjustable 14 ways, and they’re ventilated for cooling and heating.

I know I should have gotten an ev, but this thing is too fun. Pics or it didn’t happen below.

There is no substitute. I struggle with wanting to sell my Porsche every day but then as soon as I drive it, it reminds you why it has the reputation of a nearly perfect road car.
Even today, not many auto mechanics can tune a quadrajet!
That's because the last quadrajet rolled off the line in 33 years ago, and it was a 25 year old design by then. But the answer is - you throw it away and get a Holley EFI. You hardly see wheelwrights mending wagons these days, but few are lamenting it.

Now it's more clear to me why my boss is excited about getting his Rivian. It looks like it will do more than tow better than his Teslas.

https://rivian.com/support/article/how-much-horsepower-do-rivian-vehicles-have

Good to know there's a full-sized spare and substantial jack (6:56 min).

The next door neighbour to the house I’m working on has one. I was looking at it last week , neither me or my helper had ever seen or heard of it. (I don’t get out much) I figured it was electric and expensive and exclusive

You are same age my assistant learned to double her wage and a little older than when I did. I learned to embrace change, learn new stuff, and moved to both job and industry with more stability and demand.

Even in my 60s I still take on complicated stuff and dive into challenges because it's good for us and pays. I'm still me but there's no doubt I have an IMWJL v 1.x and 2.x. We can all do that.

I don't see the connection or comparison with the two very different firms' different problems. I'm aware of Rivian and the other startups challenges in manufacturing. We can't dismiss how much experience - 100+ years - some have had in manufacturing. It's also cool to see the startups and innovation.

The innovation and competition are far beyond EVs. For Wall St Journal readers, look at today's article on Chinese auto making.

In the meanwhile my boss' Rivian remains LONG overdue.

Part of my boss' delay was switching from pickup to their SUV. He could not wait for them or Ford and GM to deliver an EV pickup so leased a gasoline powered GM pickup when his Ford lease was up.

He remains really sold on EVs and doesn't fit common stereotypes for their buyers. His 3 now Tesla purchases and the stuff we've moved to electric in the enterprise has him a big fan. His use patterns have changed some skeptic in me.

Luckily for us, they’ll be driving themselves soon.
