Wow, that sucks. He was from around here... met him a couple times. One of my old guitarists went to school with him...

Really sad news. I got to see Neal in a few different bands... what a player. And apparently a kind and sweet man too. Too soon gone. Peace and comfort to his family and friends...

He did some great work with Ryan Adams and later, Chris Robinson. Wrote some really good songs too. Always liked his tasteful playing. He'll be missed.

Pitchfork is reporting that it was suicide. Very sad.

I've followed him from the very first. Very interesting and deep person who was an incredible songwriter, collaborator, leader, and player. A true artist, musician, and person who brought depth to everything he did. He certainly deserved more recognition and is one of those musicians who, when you encounter their work, makes you wonder why they are less recognized than others who are vaguely similar but far less proficient. If you haven't heard his stuff, there's an excellent compilation ("Leaving Traces" which is early solo stuff) though everything he did, on his own or with others, is stellar. This is very sad.

I figured either suicide or OD. Sad news indeed.

RIP Neal. He produced Zephaniah O'Hora's album, This Highway, which is one of the best-sounding albums I've heard in a long, long time.

I have the sads. He made some great stuff.
