Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

A great man. Made a bigger impact than just in boxing. A sad slow decline.

Some great docos on him. Behind all the bluster and bravado, he faced a lot of fears going into the ring with the likes of Frazier and Foreman.

Very sad- he didn't just fight in the ring but against other adversities in his life.

I remember when he was in his prime. I couldn't tell if he was ridiculous or amazing, at first. Even at my young age, it didn't take me long to figure out it was the latter.

    RIP Cassius Clay

Just saw that on the tube, how sad. He was something else, that guy. Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
A man of principal and action.

    This.
When a person stands up, w/o consequence, it's not that big of a deal. When it costs you dearly, but you stand anyway, that's the principle and the action that counts.
I hope I didn't cross over into politics; I was referring to personal integrity.
    Peace - Deeve

So did I, my Dad and me sitting at the kitchen table. Cassius was this brash young guy and I didn't know what to make of him but had to 'watch'. We were shocked at the outcome & man, things really got wild soon after! Great times.

I watched boxing with my old man back when the Gillette parrot carried the ring card around, and still love a good match. I went from not liking that brash Clay guy to a lifelong Ali fan, but more than that really. I grew up with the guy, if ya know what I mean? It's hard to convey to young kids just how big of a presence Ali was. I've got his biography, a couple other books and have watched every good documentary on the man. I just loved him.

He is about the only real celebrity I wish I'd met. RIP Ali.

I met him twice. Once at the law firm where I was working and the other time a party connected with the Virginia Film Festival where I was doing sound. That man had an vibe you could feel across the room. Very few people I've ever met had such a presence. I've never been a boxing fan, but I respected him on so many levels. He gave faith and hope to a lot of people.

    This one hurts.

    RIP Muhammad Ali

If you've never seen it, I recommend everyone to watch "When we were Kings", the documentary of the Ali-Foreman match in Zaire. Great music, great storytelling and great Ali.

I remember listening to it on the radio, too. I think I was supposed to be in bed already.

Later, when I was 21, I managed a college pub in southern Maine. One night, in September or October of 1978, in walk Sugar Ray Leonard and Angelo Dundee. I didn't follow boxing anymore at that point, and I was never one to drool over celebrities, but I was still a bit shocked shaking Mr. Dundee's hand. And Sugar Ray... man, he looked ... superb. Nice guys, both of them.

    From Wikipedia:
"In his fourteenth professional fight, Leonard fought his first world-ranked opponent, Floyd Mayweather, who was ranked seventeenth. The fight took place on September 9, 1978. Leonard won by a tenth-round knockout."

I'll say this much for him, it was always interesting!

I don't think anybody has put all the pieces together as a Fighter the way he did.

    Except Chuck Norris.
