One of my wife’s favorite singers was Astrud. Joao was certainly blessed with his talent for writing and to know such a talented singer. The father of bossa nova. Love his guitar voicings. So sad to hear of his passing.

Here's a version of Girl From Ipanema by a girl.

I discovered Gabriella about 15 years ago, but I forget where.

Now this song is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard.

Although not a Joao song, it's along the lines of what he wrote.

Milton Nascimiento, paired with James Taylor.

    Who would have thought?

    Mike ;)

I've been playing a lot of Joao Gilberto and bossa on my Yamaha nylon string over the last 2 weeks after I hurt my arm playing too much while learning Kid Charlemagne on the telecaster. Absolutely devastating news to read off his passing on Saturday night. I was lucky enough top see JG perform live in 2000 in Spain, its one of the absolute musical highlights of my life.

    RIP Joao. O Mito.

Did a lovely version of The Girl From Ipanema. But not a patch on this one.

Bet you can't listen to it all the way through.

I think this was the first bossa "hit". I love how it goes from minor to major. Extra points for it just being him and his guitar.

What a loss -- a true musical genius. His songs have a subtle undercurrent of melancholy that just kills me every time. Glad that he lived a long and full life.
