I was an usher working "The Concert for the Hall of Fame" at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Chuck and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band played an over two hour sound check in front of the ushers and vendors working the show. They played everyone of Chuck's hit songs. Every time Bruce thought they were finished Chuck would play the opening riff to another song and off they would fly. One of my favorite concert moments....

This feels like a different kind of sad compared to all who left this past year or so.

A Giant if not THE Giant of Rock 'n Roll. We're all standing upon his shoulders…

With no disrespect to Elvis Presley, I've maintained for over 40 years, that Chuck Berry was the true King of Rock & Roll. Elvis broke the emerging style with his great voice, looks & charisma, but the brown eyed handsome man, had the entire package; the writer's touch, with his knowing eye on the teen heartbeat, he practically wrote the original book on Rock & Roll Guitar 101, his showmanship, vocals & stage presence, were the stuff of legend! I won't even try to explain his significance to anybody out of the know...just ask Keef! Thank you Chuck, for showing us how it's done...you placed the bar, waaaaaaaaaay up there!

    Why is anyone sad?

He influenced all modern guitar music immeasurably. He was feted by anyone who got famous for playing guitar.

He lived big, parts of his personal life were questionable, he loved what he did and was fairly healthy to a ripe age, then popped off without being debilitated.

He already left his mark 60 years ago and lived long enough to enjoy it. Can't be sad about that.

Agree. This is a time to celebrate his legacy. Living to be very old can be hard; his spirit is free now. Family can mourn, the rest can be happy for him.

    RIP Chuck.
I wonder if I'm still allowed to play Oh Carol upside down behind my head as my drunken party trick.

Seriously you brought the guitar to the fore. Go well.

I have first heard of him through a bavarian Band called : " Spider Murphy Gang." They did a german Cover of Schooldays: Schuitag.
You see that everybody knew his music.
In 2008 my Brother and me had the Posibillity to see him live. Jerry Lee Lewis as Support. A really, really great Experience!

I didn't find out until after we finished our gig last night - I would've liked to throw in a cover.

Thanks Chuck. You were no saint, but we're all better off for you having been here.

so great, so great. But dont forget Johnny Johnson, who was a huge part in the composition of all the famous songs of Chuck.

Very sad day. I just watched a video on youtube of Keith Richards telling about the time Chuck caught him handling his guitar without permission and punched him in the face. Now that's a real guitar player.

RIP Chuck. If it wasn't for the intro to Johnny B Goode I never would've picked up a guitar. Thanks for the music Chuck.
