Ringo rejoins The Beatles in Australia - The Distance And Flight Time

Hi:

I hope that you are all well. You may find this interesting, even if you don't follow Ringo and/or The Beatles.

After almost two weeks apart from the group due to his tonsillitis and pharyngitis, Ringo Starr finally rejoined The Beatles in Melbourne, Australia.

After holding a press conference at Sydney Airport with manager Brian Epstein, Starr flew to Essendon Airport in Melbourne. There were large crowds already waiting, as the other three Beatles were due to arrive five hours later.

I hated to leave the other three. I followed them out to Australia and there were people at the airport, but I was on my own and just automatically I looked round for the others. I couldn’t stand it. I met up with them in Melbourne. The flight was horrendous. It still is – they may have shaved a couple of hours off the flight, but it’s still a hell of a long way. I remember the plane felt like a disaster area to me.

It was fabulous in Australia, and of course, it was was great to be back in the band – that was a really nice moment. And they’d bought be presents in Hong Kong. - Ringo 1995 Beatles Anthology

Over 19 hours for a direct flight of breathing airplane air.

The seems more likely. A flight from Florida to Melbourne (which I‘ve done fairly regularly) is 19 hours of flight time (plus wait time on 2 stops) with current flights and modern aircraft (Boeing 787). But I don’t disagree with Ringo, 19 hours on an airplane still sucks; your head and neck ache, your throat burns, and you’ve shifted your knees to a million different positions to find one that’s comfortable, but never did… but what’s worse is you’re tired as heck when you arrive, but it’s still early morning, and you can’t check in to a hotel to sleep for another 4 hours. Oh, and I’m pretty sure LAX is actually the 10th circle of hell…

l once did Edinburgh - London- Melbourne, with a twenty-minute dash at Singapore. 32hrs travelling. Never again. Every time I did thereafter, I had a Singapore overnight or two day stop-over.

Once did that getting into Singapore. Went walkabout then the river cruise, fighting sleep all the time. Checked in a 13:00 and slept seven hours. Enough time for al fresco Dinner by the river, then a dash to get the Midnight flight to Melbourne.

Very relatedly, an associate of mine has worked production, and been on every Ringo Starr All-Starr band tour for the last 20 years.

When Ringo works the western half of the United States, he likes to sleep in his own bed in LA.

So I asked my associate, oh, does he have his own plane?

He laughed and said he remembers overhearing Ringo, telling a very huge and well-known rockstar, four or five years ago when asked the same question -

“Nope - Paul is worth four or five times what I’m worth and he doesn’t have a plane…”

And then they started talking about how it was because they both came up from such working-class backgrounds. And - it was a waste of money ! 🤣
