I have two guitars I love, my Ric 660 and my Tele build, Tele body with strat 3 SD ssl 3's. At gigs I use the volume pot on the tele to boost when soloing and turn down to 7/8 when not. I have a lot of control doing this and have done it since the year dot. The one thing I don't like about the 660 is I haven't that control. The volume knobs are awkward and also using one volume knob doesn't control the volume like the Tele. Has anyone converted the wiring in a 660 to resemble that of a tele or strat ? If yes could you possibly describe how....any pics would be great. I'm open to buying new pots etc and making one up and keeping the original ric wiring / pots etc in a draw in case I ever sell it. Thanks.

Remove the Ric wiring and put it in a safe place.
If you are good at working with pickguards remove that Ric pickguard too and make your own.

Now look at standard Tele wiring with the 4 position switch that puts the pickups in series or parallel.
    Do that.
You will need one vol pot one tone pot one Tele 4 way switch.
Use a rotary switch if keeping the Ric pickguard with the controls on.

The Ric 660 will be my present to me when I feel I can play well enough to justify the cost!

    Turn the blend pot into a master volume . . . .

When (if??) I ever get a Ric, I would replace the scratchplate and wire it up 3-way switch, master volume, master tone. I would be tempted to also keep the balance pot (it isn't a blend...).

All good suggestions, but you COULD just disconnect all but two of the pots, and wire those two up as a master volume and tone. Just leave the other pots in the pickguard, unused. Easy-peasy, no new parts, no "mis-laid" parts if/when you wire it back stock. See if you can understand these drawings:

    Stock RIC wiring:

    Changed to master volume/master tone:

This idea also eliminates the .0047uF "bass choke" on the bridge pickup. You can add it back in by wiring it between the pickup and the selector switch, if desired.

Thanks Deaf Eddie...this is exactly what I'd like to do !! However understanding the drawings is another thing :)

Just thinking out loud....eg. would it entail unsoldering one wire from one volume and soldering it to the same lug on the other pot ? Same with the tone wire and the ground wires ?

See if you can get it from this SIMPLE drawing:

You may notice how far apart the pickups are meaning most older Rics have an unaturally loud neck pickup and all have the balance knob. Putting the volumes on the bottom however was just stupid. These days I wire mine as a Jbass, two volumes one tone, no switch. Seeing as it's a Ricky however I might do the Gretsch setup. Two volumes with a master volume. They use a tone switch instead of a pot but since you have the hole why not use a tone pot? That's four pots and you can cap the balance pot. Yeah that's what I'd do, use the current pickguard, 4 new pots just different assignments. YMMV ;)

Blend --- Balance kind of the same thing.
But the real thing is I think I'm going to take the 1997FG, the 360FG, and the 620FG out of the closet just to play with that damn knob !!!!
    Thnx for the impetus . . .

Well I've decided to rewire completely....not sure whether like a tele or les paul....but I'm going to solder for hours probably...guessing...trying different combinations until something works ! If you don't hear from me for 6 months I've electrocuted myself !

It's watching golf that broke it.
Drink more whisky and try again.
