He's fine. As others have said, he plays the YouTube "game" well. Personally, last year I unsubscribed from him and several others whose channels are mostly dedicated to just talking about gear. Nothing against him (or the others I unsubscribed from), it's just a personal decision as I wanted to get away from the obsessing over gear side of this hobby as much as possible. Now the main youtubers I watch are Beato, Michael Palmisano, Stichmethod, etc. I.E. Guys who actually talk about playing and break down music.

The one "gear nerd" channel I made an exception for and still keep up with is Phil McKnight. I just find that guy so dang likable. He has the most pleasant personality of anyone in the Youtube guitar world imo so I like to support him.

His stuff is okay. Taste wise we’re not really on the same wavelength, but I like the videos he does where he analyzes someone’s playing and talks about something cool that they’re doing. The studio stuff is a big who care from me though. From that little clique I guess I like fivewattworld the best, and Beato’s style can be a bit much but he does put out some genuinely useful stuff.

I watch Bukovac clips, sometimes Beato, Jedd Hughes, a very few others because they are all HIGHLY accomplished at what they do professionally/musically.

I don’t have time for dabblers.

these guys are all figuring out how to make money

@Bob Womack has nailed the technicals, and I'd add that each of these guys seems to be trying to find out a rough "personality" type to monetize

Beato = sage
Pierce and Bukovac = players
Zac = historian
Hawkins = performer/critic
Palmisano = teacher
Shull = prosumer/average guy

then there's the Instagram crowd, which has some incredible players

I always thought he worked for Novo guitars. After all one of these guitars supposedly "changed his life".

Yes. This is the sort of hyperbolic nonsense that eventually sends me on down the road from most YouTube guitar personalities.

Life suddenly changed by a solidbody guitar (late-1940's technology) with P-90 pickups (even older technology)??? Ummm...OK. :rolleyes:

I don't pay for tv/cable, so YouTube fills that void in my household. I end up watching most of the YouTube guitar shows, including Rhett's. I'd rate his show pretty high on production value (sound, editing, etc). His content is interesting enough.

Well this is how youtube(ers) works these day. Videos with dramatic titles apparently get more views. And I am not talking about Rhett only here. Its everywhere.
For me, when I see a video titled somehing like "This is my dream guitar", or "This is the last pedal I will ever buy" I never watch them. Because I am 102% sure that someone is trying to sell me something.
If I am interested in a particular thing, I will find the demo video myself and then see if I like this thing or not.

Youtube Guitar person Format:
- Clickbait title of something discovered. Ex. "The Best <Something>" or "Avoid <something> it destroys tone" or "Unboxing this awesome <thing>" or "I made a mistake <Mia Culpa>"
- Expert Bonefides Ex "I've been doing <this thing> for years and..."
- My Journey, "It's only when I tried <something>, I realize the magic of...", "I've always used <something> wrong and now I know..."
- Summary, "This may not work for you, but, this <thing> is the something you have to try"

I'm not saying it's bad, it's just a format I notice...
If you don't have cleavage, you have to resort to other forms of clickbait to get male followers.

I started following Beato with his "what makes this song great", which I enjoyed thoroughly. He bores me to tears now.

But, I got to know Schull from Beato's videos. I enjoy 80-90% of his content except when he starts to talk about his new discovery/life changing gear. On the really positive side, I like that he promotes unknown, at least to me, guitarists and artists.

Of the other related youtubers, I cannot understand Trogly's and the five watt guy's appeal. Pierce is Ok.

That was my $0.02 opinion.

I’m of the “middle” generation (44 yo), and I like Rhett. He seems enthusiastic about every aspect of music, has a wide variety of content from “gear review”, to tour vlogs, to “here’s what my life looks like now”. I think he understands Youtube, understands his viewers, and understands his niche in the Youtube “guitar” sphere. Some of his stuff is a little “really, you don’t know why a Tubescreamer works for so many players?”, but for the most part it’s well thought out, well edited, and though he may not be the “best” guitarist put there I enjoy his playing. He’s heads and tails above me as a player, and I’ve been playing since he was still in diapers.

The fact that he hustles his a** off to make enough money from Youtube to pay his mortgage, bills, build a studio, travel, gig with good friends, and live life… that’s a pretty commendable effort.

I did, too, for awhile. His video on Boston's "More Than A Feeling" was a great reminder of the craft that used to go into recording. It should be required viewing for all young producers and artists.

But, then he tried to convince me that Blink 182 had a "great" song. I took my leave, at that point.

I'm slightly older than you, and this sums up my impression perfectly. Also, he doesn't seem breathless about every piece of gear--he doesn't even seem to like some of what he talks about, and there's a bias toward discussing what you like. Also, I don't understand why he gets so much grief for his unabashed love for his first Novo.

This isn't just about Rhett, but I get sick of the "You are doing it wrong" or You're using the wrong strings (Beato) click bait titles. I won't watch them because there is no wrong in rock and roll...

Bukovac is a goldmine. So is Pierce. I don't watch them as much as I used to, because at this point (started at the beginning of the pandemic), I feel like they've said pretty much all they can.

Ditto That Pedal Show. Alot of great info there over the years, but they've covered it all already. And "new gear" only holds interest for so long... I'm so over gear at this point. I just want to play.

Beato is OK, I usually only tune in when he's interviewing a player I like. Otherwise I have better things to be doing, like playing.

I actually blocked Spender from my "suggestions". COMPLETE waste of time.
