More than once this winter I've had a listing flagged on Reverb for using stock pictures, their policy is that only factory authorized dealers may do so.

Here's the catch. One of my side hustles is eCommerce and involves product photography and photo editing. The flagged pictures have all been my own work.

Long story short, if you are a little guy Reverb only wants to see bad pictures. So turn off those extra lights, get your thumb over the lens, and make sure your socks or crocs are clearly visible.

You're misrepresenting the situation. It's not about being a "little guy," and to claim that Reverb only wants bad pictures is absurd.

Even if a stock photo is your own work, you can't use it unless that's the exact item you're selling. That's always been their policy for big and small sellers. The authorized dealer exception applies to new items from those dealers, not to everything they sell.

    1) Tongue in cheek
    2) My own listings are always one-of items I am passing along, I just take good pics of them

Do you retain ownership rights to the stock pictures that have been flagged by Reverb?

They aren't stock pictures, they are pictures I took of my own used items for sale. Because of my other job skills I made them look as professional as a stock photo would from a manufacturer or large retailer. On items that are scuffed or marked or whatever it's obvious to them it isn't a stock photo. On something that's mint it's not.

Really wasn't ranting seriously, folks. I just thought it was silly. If I were a retailer with authorized status they wouldn't get flagged. I'm just a guy who wanted to show my listings in the best possible way.

I guess they aren't use to seeing professional quality in the amateur section. Maybe include a pet or car. I would love to be able to take better pics of my gear. Got any tips?

You can use my image. Even my wife won't claim ownership.

Maybe try natural lighting, or set up your kitchen table.

People are having a really hard time with this- and I’m not sure why. It was clear as a bell in your first post.

    1. HIS PICTURES ARE NOT STOCK PHOTOS, THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL QUALITY PHOTOS OF THE SPECIFIC ITEM BEING SOLD

    2. HE OWNS THE DAMNED RIGHTS TO THE PHOTOS THAT HE TOOK AND ARE NOT OR EVER WERE STOCK PHOTOS

    3. OP NEVER INDICATED THAT HE HAS EVER TAKEN A STOCK PHOTO FOR A MANUFACTURER

    4. OP’S PHOTOS AREN’T STOCK PHOTOS

    5. NOT STOCK PHOTOS

    6. LAS FOTOS NO ESTÁN EN STOCK

I love the photos that show what should be an incredibly expensive guitar laying on a driveway or a bed of gravel!

Those actually could be stock photos from Gibson. Was there a bulldozer in the background?

To further clarify: the work I do that involves product photography is for an unrelated sales industry, in case anyone was reading incorrectly that I was using those stock photos for my personal listings or some such.
