No major surprises as far as the major trends are concerned, but it's cool to have some hard data, courtesy of Reverb, on how the market for used musical instruments and other gear developed during this odd year.

It seems many bought entry-level gear, added to their home (studio) setups and avoided spending big on vintage instruments. It also seems this could be a good time to shift my search for another amp into high gear.

    What stands out to you?

What stands out to me is that people still think you can still easily find a MIM Fender in decent, unmodified, condition for $250.

Music stores and bicycle shops did pretty well through the craziness.

My favorite is seeing people put Fender in the listing when it's a Squier.

What's the percentage for electric guitars as a whole?

The average price of used electric guitars fell by 0.5 per cent, from $1,139 to $1,133, between 2019 and 2020.

The Telecaster is an instrument reduced to direct function - and therein lies its power!

Ergo, I'm not shocked by this data...

    I think they were reaching for the EVH sales data;

Hes impactful, and his signature gear is going up some, but guitars for "weedley dweedly" stuff have been on the rise in popularity for a year or so.

No shock in most of this. I'd like to see a tube amp by wattage comparison, but I'm well aware the plague kept the trend toward smaller amps popular.

selling to punters is a chore on reverb. too many tire kickers and malcontents asking stupid questions. and by stupid i mean: "the answer to whatever this dummy just asked me is easily visible in the picture of the item itself."

as others here have noted, there are hardly any good used deals on Reverb anymore and when there are some to be had, they disappear very quickly.

the lesson seems to be buy your gear brand new - so that is what i have been doing. though to be fair, i need to lay off the gear. pedals especially, ha

I'm honestly puzzled by some listings on Reverb now. I see several listings for an American Ultra tele for over $2k. They are literally available for less brand new from all the major online retailers. Who would pay *more* for a used telecaster, when you can get the same exact thing brand new right now, with free shipping? I really don't understand the logic here...

It's a wrap on that for sure. But I do think 500 bucks on a player series is a good deal, and you can still find that deal if you're vigilant

I honestly thought the exact opposite would have happened this year and sold some stuff that I wish I wouldn’t have because I thought values would drop significantly. I was hoping to pick up some vintage amps cheap (Fender Showman as an example), yet they are listed higher than they were when I sold a nice one 2 years ago foolishly. Also have been hoping for an AO 70’s Tele Custom in white at around the $1200 mark. That ain’t happening unless 2021 shakes things up.

I must be buying junk or overpaying because I havent made money or even broken even on any reverb sales this year.

I was looking at some Japanese model guitars. Prices are way up from what I have seen.

I bought my FSR MIM tele at the end of 2019 for 500 with shipping included.

But it’s true, people have been spending like crazy on sub 1000 dollar stuff. I must have sold 20 synth modules this year. I imagine most teles fit into a nice price point and “always gotta have at least one,” “always wanted to have one in my stable” mentality where they’re getting sucked up, and the price increase reflects that. There are barely any up on local listings here.

how much did Reverb fees increase this year? Maybe sellers are trying to recuperate some of their losses on that front. Shipping and fees are a profit killer on these sales.

I think the rise in fees has something to do with higher selling prices.

Some will say it's only a small increase. But there are plenty of posts
on that and its another topic.

A combination of factors must be contributing to this. One is definitely that Reverb is increasingly a global platform, meaning the group of potential buyers includes people from markets where a new one may cost more, where free shipping is not available, and where the offering may be limited in terms of finishes and other features.
