Is anyone else amazed/disgusted as I am with the generally high asking prices for gear on Reverb? Everything seems overpriced, which frankly doesn’t make much sense given the glut of instruments and gear out there “post-covid” purchased by folks who now don’t want the gear. It seems that the used supply is enormous, but the prices across the board are on par with or more expensive than new. Supply-Demand Economics apparently no longer apply.

It is a good time to sit back and wait until used prices stabilize.

I think that what we’re seeing is a direct result of the huge sales tax expansion we saw a couple years ago, and the increase in Reverb’s cut that shortly followed.

It also seems that for Reverb sellers who have a proper brick and mortar store that going there in person - responsibly, or contacting them directly by phone, their own website, or email would support them by saving them the added cost of a Reverb sale.

I love Reverb, but this was inevitable. And things are tough enough now anyways.

This has come up before. A lot of this is due to Reverb raising the cost of selling.

I've noticed inflated prices, too. Baja Telecasters, for instance, seem to be listed anywhere from $800 to $1100. But if you look in the Reverb Price Guide, you'll see they aren't selling for nearly that much. $675 seems about the median. I suspect it's that way with a lot of listings.

But... when the government spends wildly and just prints more money, everything ends up costing more. Inflation is coming. And higher taxes, too.

Yes yes yes that’s what happens

I know this and I’m not the smartest person

Glut of money = inflation

Seems like A LOT of people don’t understand this

I only buy on Reverb if I desperately want something that I can't find anywhere else. I try to buy local whenever possible, to keep my neighbors employed and the local stores afloat, but if I can't do that, then I much prefer Ebay to Reverb. The prices are better, and I can often get free shipping, and Reverb shipping prices (as well as all prices there) are insane.

Closer than you'd expect
I don't really follow these things. I know some policy over at Reverb changed, and a bunch of people were upset about it, and then suddenly fewer good things were appearing. Even moreso, eBay has dried up. It's not just musical gear. It's anything good that they don't make anymore.

I kind of suspect that basically all the cool people have already bought everything good from the past, and there really just isn't anything good left that anyone would want to sell. Which is kind of ok with me, because I have a lot of junk I don't need. But still, there are a few more that I'd like to shove in my garage before I die.

I've picked up a few things on reverb but that was several years ago. Today, I can't even consider it. There are a lot of dealers on there driving up prices thinking people will offer them less so they raise their prices to compensate. It then sets the bar for used gear much higher which is great for sellers, if and when they find a buyer, but overall it's slowing the number of transactions I would wager. Mixing commercial vintage guitar companies with a people's market place is always going to work against the people.

Prices are up everywhere and have been for some time. Reverb is just the worst offender and a possible contributor. Other reasons have also been given.

Prices seem high right now for everything, good thing I really don't have a need for anything. Most of the listings on Reverb allow offers so just offer what you are willing to pay and don't be offended if you are rejected.

Amazed, but if one is serious, one can make an offer under the asking price and see what happens. At some point, I’m guessing folks will sell for less. How much less? Who knows?

I need to put a 1940 something Gibson lapsteel on there before everyone spends their stimulus check.......

Reverb is in many ways it's own slice of the used market. Some prices sellers ask seem crazy compared to even GC used prices. Patience is important.
