I'll be leaving this post open on the computer my best beloved and I share. Now, if I could just remember when our anniversary is...

    (Beautiful photo btw)

I nearly quit playing, the first time I saw John Hammond perform. My harp playing buddy felt the same....after the opening song.

A pity the title and the format makes it seem like a competition, when that's clearly not his intention. There are some very polarised views in the comments on YouTube, which I think is a shame. They're very different guitars and I know Matt deliberately set out not to make his Mules sound or play like Nationals. As one example, he uses a flat back, rather than the arched back of Nationals and most Chinese metal bodied resonators I've seen, specifically for acoustic purposes.

I'd love to add a National, old or new, to my herd, but I'm very happy with my Mule and it's my "play everyday, take it with me when I go" guitar. I'm really pleased I got it before Matt stopped taking international orders and limited the available options. It was a special experience watching it being built through regular progress photos, and I'm not sure buying a new National would be quite such a personal experience.

An engraved National tricone is still on my "in your dreams" list, but I'm really enjoying my Chinese Royall tricone at less than 1/3rd the cost of Mule or National.

Check out this clip from 1937. It is an ad from Daas Haag. 3 bands including Django and his hot club band. The last band "Swinging Poppas". Guitar player takes solo on resonator in big band.

I recently got this sweet 1994 Dobro model 33 from my buddy through some trading, its in great shape and sounds awesome. I've wanted a style 0 forever and while this aint exactly that, it gets in the ballpark visually and tonally, its got that cool, kinda compressed brass biscuit tone, very different than the clang of my Duolian. A fine addition to my reso hoard. 20211108_155601.jpg 20211108_155621.jpg 20211117_144914.jpg
Oh yeah, rumor has it that the 14 fret body die was one of the only original dies to survive WWII, if thats the case then this body was made on the exact same die as my '36 Duolian, they appear the same to me.
