Willie Nelson’s guitar, “Trigger,” is in for repairs at Erlewine Guitars in Austin, Texas. Mark Erlewine shares a closeup look at the famous hole in the top. Mark’s been Trigger’s caretaker for ages, and he gives us the inside scoop on Trigger’s history.

At least Erlewine can be trusted with such an iconic guitar.

Not like the luthiers at Musicman. Who, when Eddie van Halen brought over his famous Kramer 5150 guitar for repair, since it had a broken headstock, promptly put a Musicman logo on the said headstock.

Or that luthier who when Jeff Beck brought in his blonde Les Paul, replaced it's PAF pickups with modern Gibson humbuckers and inlayed an old style "The Gibson" Logo. Beck described the result as "revolting"

But the worst one has to be the guy who repaired Ritchie Blackmore's Strat and told him "Hey, no extra charge but I planed the fingerboard of your guitar since I saw it had been worn away between the frets."

I've had unauthorized "repairs" performed as well, to my disgust. Its not because of poor judgement or generous kindness to "improve" an instrument. Its coverup for a mistake or damage that occurred in their shop. Old trick of the trade.

    Can't wait for part 2.

Trigger and Willie. Pretty amazing. I only saw Willie perform once, as an opener to The Dead in 2004(?). I don't think he tried to upstage anyone, it just kinda happened. After about the 50th song... with all the girlfriends on their guys shoulders, flipping up their tops in tribute. Hard life, but someone's gotta do it...

Thanks for posting. I've seen it's progression over the years at lots of shows and it certainly defines Willie's sound.

Mark's a really nice guy. I've had him do some set-ups and work for me. Always enjoy speaking with him.

Yeah, put it in a museum and build him a new guitar....

it's probably more for image than any unique sound....
