Take them off and play it.
"Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
They are mirrors with a foam adhesive backing on them
Haven’t been tempted at all to even try using them
I recall reading a story that a friend of Pages thought it would be a nice surprise to take his dragon tele in and get it re-finished with a nice proper paint job. Rumour has it that Jimmy wasn’t too happy about it. I guess he thought his own paint job was pretty nice.
I'm pretty sure a hammer would break those mirrors up into small pieces that would fall right off. The trick is to hit hard enough just to break the mirror and stop, that way you don't hurt the body or paint.
"Do you feel lucky?"
And I’m pretty sure that’s the worst idea we’re going to hear for removal of the mirrors.
Get smart with me like that one more time...
There's an interview with Jimmy about the Telecaster that had been refinished. He said that when it was refinished it changed the sound of the guitar.
Yes, using a hammer sounds like a terrible idea. For one thing, breaking a mirror (even a plastic one) presumably result's in seven year's bad luck. For another, it's liable to make a potential mess an order of magnitude worse. What about heating the mirrors with a hair dryer before peeling them off? Does heat damage nitro?
I’d suggest gentle use if a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, note gentle, and prise them off. Any residual glue should come off without damaging the finish with some WD40 and a soft cloth. Mind you, getting the shop to do it seems like a good plan!
You mean he could have masked off the mirrors and did the refinish with them in situ.................no, didn’t think you did!
Heat gun perhaps ? And why would someone do that to a perfectly fine guitar ? I can hear my Dad now: "I suppose if Jimmy Page jumped off a cliff you'd jump off one too ?" Miss ya Dad.
Obvoius answer... contact Fender and ask them how to remove the mirrors.
Unless it's being sold for $1200 I'd just pass on it, there are plenty more out there with the mirrors inside the case, where they belong.
After looking on Reverb, it seems that they are coming down a bit, so I might go this route. I can wait a little longer.
All kinds of stickerglue go away with wd40
it looks like used they are going for about 2K, but I see one with the mirrors on it for 1699,and I saw another one on the guitar center in "Good" as opposed to Great of Excellent condition for 1699 as well, I wonder if that's a post mirror removal example. There is no explanation on the condition beyond the standard blurb, and the picture is small so?
Try using Goo Gone
I believe it involves a saint, or a knight, and a sword.
I punk sometimes, but more often I metal.
And according to Page, the wiring was busted, one pickup didn't work...this "friend" sounds like a nutter.
Didn't the neck of the 'Mirror/Dragon' Tele end up on the Botswana Brown Tele that he uses ?
