James Gang “Bang”
One of the great all-time records
Sorry , but DP was a booze band....and only on occasion
If in doubt listen to the bootlegs that are out there , yikes , very sad....
The album is really good , though...
Gettin’ Tighter is by far one of the best DP songs ever ... by a long shot ... and I’m a DP fan.
I agree , the album was fresh , and I loved it then and now !
I just bought Spectrum and Bang off ebay.
His excursions on the Maestro Echoplex are epic, yardstick and trademark. It's those I've learned to hone in, and throw in face of pedal manufacturers when the claimed to have nailed the Echoplex thing. I say "can it do ray gun effect like that of Tommy Bolin" and they look stumped for a minute and then goes "welll....errhhh...these just goes to eleven".
recommended: 2 solo albums. Both. None better than the other. "Homeward Strut", from Teaser, the moog bass in unision with bass/gutar made me almost crap my pants. Talk about the "brown note"...I mean look at the lineup among the musicians on that album. Porcaro, Sanborn, Dave Foster (responsible for that moog line), Phil Collins (!), Narada Michael Walden, Jan Hammer etc etc ...
You won’t be disappointed.
FYI. Roy Kenner does the vocals on Bang. Standing in the Rain and Must Be Love are great Tommy guitar tracks
There was ap pic of Tommy on another site and I wrote a caption for it.
I am going to repeat what I wrote.
This pic says to me, "Hello my name is Tommy and I am going to play
the best guitar you have ever heard and afterwards I am going to take your girlfriend
Also f*ck heroin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gettin' Tighter = Funky Song / Was fun to play it live.
I saw Tommy with The James Gang in Cleveland. Tommy did his Echoplex Solo.
Cleveland Stadium World Series of Rock.
I had to pull a Strat out of its case after seeing this thread.
I wore this album out!!
we wore Private Eyes out...
I can only like this once.
And a salute to everyone honoring a guy who COULD HAVE BEEN the greatest guitar player/frontman/musician in modern rock music.
I was at that show.
Great player; sad.
I have been a Tommy fan for as long as I can remember.
I guess I'll share this with you guys. I have played along with his music while trying to cop that Bolin vibe. Strat, Tube Amp... always trying to get that weird dissonance he seemed to pull out at will.
About ten years ago I was playing along with one of his CDs. I dont know why but I just tuned up to one of his leads. I was really getting that vibe. Finally !!!
I tried playing to another song in the same key...I was about 1 Cent flat. I checked the tuner and re-tuned.
Spot on... I went back to the Bolin CD...couldnt nail the same solo...the vibe was GONE.
Whenever I want to.get that Bolin Vibe, I tune just 1 cent down from the song key.
Kind of like the Tempered Tuning trick that Pedal Steel players use. I swear to God it works. I think that Tommy stumbled onto this trick and used it.
